Better than 55-300mm?

I have an older, manual version of the Sigma 400mm/5.6. It's a nice, lightweight lens, but since it's a manual it needs a little practice to get good shots. I also find it's not really wide enough to use with a teleconveter (the Pentax 1.7x specifically) unless there's a lot of light. Here's a sample I took hand-held out a school bus window in the rain. There are some other examples near the end of this album.
