Just to bump my post above this, would be good to know before I call the repairer to get a quote on how much I might be looking at in case someone has experienced this particular issue!

Would it still be the clutch if the manual focus still actually works?
When I put it into Manual mode it allows me to take a photo but it won't go into the menus or anything. When I switch it to AFS or C it has a spaz, the live view shows the AF just continually switching between AFS and M.

The focus ring has always felt a bit dodgy to me since the day I got it, but I didnt really know any better. Then I got my 50-135 (oops another SDM :() and it feels so beautiful to manually focus in comparison.

I am not super comfortable with opening up the lens, even though I would love to not pay for a repair :(

That seems like a logical explanation. This is sad. Is this common?

So you are saying you had this exact problem and managed to fix it? Cause I thought maybe there was something else wrong with my lens, like something wrong with the focus ring if it wasn't able to turn - but you think it is the file I used?

Ok so my SDM 16-50mm started acting up (AF not working) and after reading and reading for the last two days I assumed it must be the SDM issue - so I just did this little fix and I can hear the screw driver "revving" but my lens focus isn't actually moving/changing :'( Soo... any ideas on what is actually wrong with my lens? I do have a make up of the original lens profile so I can just revert it back.
Devastated since everyone elses worked! Helppppp
