Most of the surveillence issues significantly escalated just after 9/11, because Washington realized that they no longer had a way of bringing most of the perps to justice, because most of them just gave themselves up by doing things like flying planes into buildings. Well at least that is the united states governments version. Even though over one third of the original reported highjackers are in fact - still alive

But agencies such as the NSA were going full speed well before 9/11. The infamous splicing rooms at places such as AT&T were reported well before 9/11

Be sure to catch Popular Mechanics - January 2013 issue.

The article a bit too brief, but it should give a good foundation on exactly where to go next.

For instance under the cameras section and exactly how it relate to use of cameras throughout the state of Pennyslvania. That numerous law enforcement agences can access (many, many) cameras and then use facial recognition to compare against databases. Ironically that's nothing new; casino's have been doing it for many years. But Pennsylvania does it quite routinely.

The article claims it uses this data against criminal databases. Not quite correct. It also uses it against publlicly posted data (even Facebook) and data such as drivers licenses. It tracks over eighty percent of all state residences on a much more frequent rate than (say) weekly.

And then there's also data on everyone that is for sale. Give me a name of any adult individual in america and throw a small amount of money at it. I could easily pull many hundreds of pages on almost all activites that one does

All text messages in america are already stored in numerous formats.

First the carrier stores them for a period of at least one year. These same carrier often cooperate with both law enforcement and government to provide information - and without warrants of any kind. Texts are also intercepted before reaching their final destination by two government agencies; the FBI out of Clarksburg WV, and also the NSA at two seperate locations - one in VA, the other in GA.

Computer based texts are also easily intercepted as noted above, but also stored by ones internet provider

But it gets more interesting…

The united states american government now has the ability to live view almost anything on the planet; between satelites and drones. Try to go indoors?? No problem there, as there are also two new "drone updates" that now "can use" a version of the xray spectrum to see completely through most any building. All brought to you by companies such as BAE

PC rental store accused of using webcams, keyloggers on customers | Ars Technica

And another link I cannot yet find...

During any bank robbery in america; after the fbi is notified... They rarely even bother to use the bank security cameras until trial, because... The fbi uses a type of cellular/mobile phone tower trace.

During a robbery in which most criminals aren't exactly rocket scientists - robbers even typically leave their mobile phones on themselves. Using rather simple tech to determine who was in the area and then "selectively" narrowing it down - it doesn't take long to identify most bank robbers. This exact type of techn has been used on numerous other types of crimes. It first "came to light" at about the time when O.J. was acccused of murder. Btw ironcally OJ's phone was at that ery crime scene - as calculated by that very mobile phone tower, signal triangulation, strenght, etc..

Last year a type of rental retail chain did exactly that. Using a type of program that was not completely removeable; the rental chain Aaron's had all of their laptop rental computers outfitted with this software.

Naturally the software would monitor items like rental payments, but... Would also enable a type of "remote assistance/remote desktop feature; that without letting the user know - would activate the laptops built in webcam and microphone.

Professionally speaking (actually stating) as a Microsoft Partner; this was quite an impressive little bit of software coding. Even most computer professionals would have never known it was there.

Might I also add; a similiar incident such as this was also found to have been done by a school district. It also has to make one wonder; darn why did I ever accept a computer for work purposes. Wonder if my employer is watching me now??

My personal favorite are the EarthCams in N.Y.C.; especially the two in times square directly outside of the McDonalds. All of the ones in Times Square used to have sound; and used to have it quite well. At about 0500 hours one could hear a cafe conversation and also conversations of passerby's. It's since been readjusted.

Also in general reference to Google cams viewable from most any computer... What you are seeing is the tones down version. The *real* version shows well over four times the resolution from the aerial level; the unedited street view (coming around soon to be in 3d - city by city) is also so high res is can read which denomination of dollar bill you have - from fifty feet.

Also... Some LEO's and other emergency service organizations have a version of Google that even shoes the entire blueprint of ones house; just by zoomng over it. Quite useful in fighting structure fires. As a matter of fact in the general Pittsburgh region the local Allegheny County website (at one time) even had a public version of this; which showed even more... Zoom over a house and a god portion of them (well over 100k++ houses) had their county assesment pics on them - that's the pics from inside of the houses. It even had quite the amount of details about the homeowners. Most of the data since removed from public view, but it is also technically still out there if you know where to look
