Good on Telstra NBN NOT

Back in 1993, I was seconded, with several others from my company, to Telecom Australia** (as Telstra was then called) for an initiative instigated by the then CEO, Frank Blount. It was called Breakthrough for Customers and was intended to produce significant improvement in quality - not just technical but in customer relations, etc.

After 3 months, I handed in my laptop and walked out, went to the airport and flew back to Sydney to my employer. It was obvious the initiative was never going to work - the people at the Telecom coalface simply didn't want to work with us. I did get some flak from the Telecom people who complained that every one of the secondees from our company had walked out.

I think the whole initiative collapsed not long after.

** This was the second time I'd been seconded to Telecom Australia. The first was to Telecom Australia International in Saudi Arabia in 1989.

I don't know where the problem lies. The Optus website rarely gives any useful info. I have reported issues, e.g., no internet or phone, a number of times only to be told there is no known problem. Amazingly, it comes good after some hours or a day.

Optus are reportedly only giving people only 30 days to sign with them (or another provider) after NBN connection or else suffer disconnection and loss of their landline number. So much for the 18 months NBN says one has to change.

Ditto for me but I have broadband cable with Optus. I haven't had a copper landline for 20+ years, my phone is on the cable broadband system.

After a storm yesterday arvo, my Optus broadband internet and telephone went down. I had no service from 1840hrs until 1040hrs today. I couldn't even use my Optus mobile phone to log onto the Optus website to check the network status. I was getting network unavailable messages. I used my wife's Vodafone check the status.

I use Optus because of the long expiry pre-paid plans - I make very few phone calls. I did have Telstra in my carphone but they closed the 2G network last December so I've moved it to Vodafone - their 2G network isn't closing until September. After that, I'll probably have to fit a Bluetooth to the car.

After having been with OTC for most of my working life, it was an embarrassment to have to tell people, after the merger, that I worked for Telstra.

No, Singapore Telecom (Singtel). Singtel was once owned by the Singapore Govt. When I was working in OTC in restoration planning and later in submarine cable protection, I had a lot of contact with Singtel and their predecessor, TAS.

You're right - I'd forgotten the Future Fund has sold off the remaining shares.

---------------

Gents, leave out the politics or this will be closed.

------------

I started working for the Overseas Telecommunications Commission (OTC) in 1965 and, after 3 years training as a technician, initially worked in OTC's satellite communication earth stations. Aussat was born out of OTC - a lot of my colleagues from the satellite stations were moved across to Aussat. Aussat eventually became Optus and OTC was merged with Telecom Australia (KD, the later name for the PMG's Dept/Australian Post Office) to become Telstra.

I took redundancy from Telstra in 2002 after 37 years with OTC then Telstra.

Yep, it has nothing to do with photography.

In very simple terms:

Telstra is the biggest telco in Australia, largely owned by the Aust govt and is the equivalent of British Telecom or AT&T. It was originally part of the Australian Post Office, much like BT came out of the British Post Office.

Optus is the next biggest telco and is owned by Singapore Telecom. Before SingTel bought it, it started out of the company for which I worked.

NBN is the National Broadband Network and is the Australian govt's initiative to get a faster network throughout the populated areas of Oz. NBN Co. Is wholly owned by the Australian govt (federal not state).

The plan is that the copper network (owned by Telstra) will be replaced by the broadband network.

Telstra or NBN Corp?

I don't what's happening here now. I'm on Optus broadband cable (which Is HFC - hybrid fibre cable) for phone and Internet and expected to eventually be fibre to the premises*. Optus (or NBN) came through our street late last year and connected to the HFC everyone who wasn't already connected, e.g., my next door neighbour who doesn't have Internet or cable TV.

If they are no longer going to do FTTP, what we'll get is unknown.

The other thing is that NBN's charge for 12MB/s is about the same as I currently pay Optus for 30MB/s

* Optus call it fibre to the premise - they obviously think premise is the singular of premises. It's not.
