To me, it is not "forcing myself to work in a certain way", but rather that using a prime forces me to think, consciously, about the photography I am about to take. A zoom. I end up "just snapping without thinking" as I do not need to care about framing (for example). Yes, I have the same problem with P-mode :D

Or, you could just bring a single prime "on location" each time, and save $800 ;)
