Come on get a grip guys! CRK can only distribute what they get from Pentax itself. Having just lobbed back into Oz a hour or so ago from Japan, it's clear they have one strong market which is Japan itself. So the initial release would want to prioritise the domestic market and yesterday is the start of Japan's Golden Week holiday break which commercially would be a very important date to hit for that market if the number of people in the small suburban Tokyo camera shop I was in yesterday is any indication. At least that's what I would be doing if a commercial manager with Ricoh.

It could be that the Kumanote earthquake is also forcing some production/distribution re-prioritations to be quietly made behind the scene. Sony has an imaging sensor and related componentry plant down there which appears to have taken a hit and there is significant local destruction as well affecting power/utilities and logistics generally. I've seen a report that Canikon are both experiencing production impacts already.

As someone who travelled thru Kumanote just 13 hours before the first quake and had to make alternate plans to get back from southern Kyushu, the impact there is very significant with 200,000 people in temporary shelters in the first few days after the twin quakes. There will be significant uncertainty as to when life will return to some state of normality down there.

I understand that some people might want the new camera before a trip or particular event and be disappointed, but bagging CRK seems unfair. I'm sure they would love to have stock to sell, given the interest in the K-1.

Well, I can confirm that the K-1 is on sale today in Tokyo. Just saw one go out the door at a camera shop I was visiting and another was sitting on their display shelves.

Today is the start of Golden Week here which is an important holiday period in Japan. So a well timed release for the local market.

Been good presales advertising for the K-1 over here. Generally a large cardboard sign fairly prominently displayed in most of the larger stores and a nice glossly multi-page brochure for the interested to take. Which I did, but being in Japanese, I can only get a broad overview of the marketing messages.

The other price of information from the Ricoh/Pentax showroom was awareness/confirmation of future lens offerings, in so much as it was evident that there was a clear focus on the need to deliver wide aperture primes over the next year or so.

When you look at it, Pentax had done a good job on the zooms to match the K-1 delivery date, now covering 15-450mm with quality glass; plus 9 or so primes with obvious full frame coverage; plus a few more DA lenses where there may be close to full coverage.

A DFA 20 or 24mm would be very desirable, plus a new wide aperture portrait lens would round things out nicely. Maybe throw in refreshed 35 and 50mm primes and it's a pretty good initial offering IMO.

I'm in Japan at the moment and paid a visit to the Ricoh/Pentax offical showroom in Shinjuku (Tokyo). Had a play with the K-1. It's there and its real! Very solid feeling and focusing with the new DC motors very quiet and confident (mostly played with the new 28-105). Mirror is distinctly quick and very quiet. They're done a very good job with that. This immediately stood out, even vs the K-3 I use. Putting lenses aside, the handling of the K-1 was very similar to the K-3. The man there would probably sell me one later this week but unfortunately I need to pay off the Japan trip (for 4 people) first :(

Also sighted the new DFA 15-30 and had a quick play with it on the K-1. Broadly similar size to the 24-70.
Both it and the 24-70 are solid units. Not that much longer than a DA*16-50 but much wider in diameter.

The 28-105 is a nice compromise carry about size. If it proves to be of the same optical standard as the DA16-85 it could be a good travel lens. I reckon a K-1 plus the 24-70 would get heavy in the backpack after a few hours walkabout. With the shallower depth of field for a given aperture and better high ISO performance of full frame, the smaller apertures of the 28-105 are less of a hindrance than the same specifications used on APS-C.

Had a play with the 645Z as well. You know that has a big mirror lurking within it. Sound is not harsh but it does take some time to go thru its motions!

I'm going to be in Japan during April. An afternoon at the Tokyo Pentax store is on my 'to do' list. Hopefully lots of the new Pentax goodies to fondle :-) even if the cost of a family holiday in Japan means my K-3 is at no short term risk of being put to pasture.

Crikey Sandy that was a quick response!

---------- Post added 22nd Feb 2016 at 09:56 PM ----------

For what it is worth given CRK would be negotiating with Japan, the AUD is currently around a 3+ year low again the yen. I'm currently in the process of booking 3 weeks accomodation in Japan and it hurts!

Don't just convert the B&H price to AUD. It's way past the GST free import limit and you will get hit with both GST and import duties. And don't forget shipping and insurance which will likely add at least AUD70. And just ask Sandy Hancock about the pain and expense getting something back to the US for warranty and then back to Oz again.

That all will represent much more than AUD2600 landed.
