Some real life shots with the 100mm f/3.5 Takumar from 1957. Although I added some contrast in post processing, it's actually way better than I thought it would be. That's not a real surprise because old triplets are usually fairly contrasty because of their lack of lens elements. :)

And yours truly with this lens in action... (no, I'm not the guy in my avatar because that's Jun Hirakawa, the legendary Pentax lens designer).

It all depends on the subject. Here's another quick snap with the 100mm f/3.5 Takumar, wide open.

Some test shots with Asahi's oldest tele lens: the three-element 100mm f/3.5 Takumar from 1957.

The first one was shot wide open, the 2nd at f/5.6 and the last one at f/8. The softness and glow wide open is quite obvious. I think these results show why this lens was quickly replaced with the four-element 105mm f/2.8 Takumar.

I also wanted to know the difference with the 100mm f/2.8 Meyer Trioplan, which is also a triplet, but the bubble bokeh of the Asahi is certainly not "distracting". The Trioplan bokeh has strong outlines. The Takumar- almost none at all.

(Never mind the condition of the Kodak Retina. Being inoperable, It's always sitting on my dusty bookshelf.)

Wide open (f/3.5)

These were not described but I'm sure it's the 135mm Tak and the original Asahi extension tube set. No wide angle that I see.

Hi Pepe,

What effect do you mean? I must say that I really like your photo, nothing wrong with that one! Yes, I shoot solely in P mode, albeit in RAW. So I can change the exposure in post processing where necessary. But that's about all I do with the RAWs (apart from manual white balancing)...

Some recent photos with my precious black + chrome "Sonnar" Takumars. Not bad for 60 year old lenses, eh?

(The 83mm Takumar is the reason why I sold my FA* 85/1.4, FA77 Limited, M85/2 and 85mm f/1.8 S-M-C Takumars. I really like the Sonnar-look. But of course I kept my 85mm f/4.5 Ultra-Achromatic).

Nice camera! You should select either the 58mm f/2 or 58mm f/2.4 Takumar but both are rare... unfortunately, but they are special!

My contribution in this thread, shot with the K-5 and 50mm f/1.4 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar:

In the past I have owned and sold many lenses, even FA* ones, but this lens is on the very short list of lenses I will keep for the rest of my life (the other lenses being the 58mm f/2 Takumar, the 83mm f/1.9 Takumar, the 8-element 50mm f/1.4 Takumar, the SMC Pentax 28mm f/2 and lastly the SMC Pentax-A 50mm f/1.2. I currently don't have the 135mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.4 and 200mm f/4 A* lenses but that'll definitely happen). And oh yes, the 300mm f/4 A* is also bound to stay in my collection forever.

I think you can forget about finding one as only 25 or so are known to exist today. Indeed; most Ultra-Achromatic Takumars were sold to scientific institutions and that should come as no surprise given its price tag and intended purpose (it was the second most expensive Takumar lens at that time, just a bit cheaper than the 1000mm f/8 Takumar).

But... I wish you much luck finding one! :)

Great owl shots! I did not know the lens was that good...

My first humble tries with the 8-element 50mm f/1.4 Super-Takumar. All shot wide open except @2 which was at f/2).

Well, it's not that common, in all those years I never encountered one on any of the camera shows I visited and I prefer getting my stuff cheap. So I tried my luck on Marktplaats (the Dutch version of Craigslist) and again in all those years not one showed up, not even hidden on some bodies. And it's hard to search for one because almost all sellers do not know about the differences between the 8- and the 7-element version, or 7-element versions are mistakenly sold as 8 element versions...

But at least I now have the "cemented triplet" trio complete: the 58mm f/2 Takumar "Sonnar", the 83mm f/1.9 Takumar (also a Sonnar) and the 50mm f/1.4 Takumar. All three are lenses that Asahi quickly got rid of because the cemented triplet was hard to make and thus very expensive.

It's not yellowed by the way, the coating itself is yellow. It's completely clear when looked at it at the right angle (it's not a SMC so no "deep blacks" when looking through the front element).

And since I have all optical variants of the 50mm f/1.4 Takumar it's nice to see how they compare to each other re: the famous yellowing. It does not surprise me that the oldest, 8 element, version does not yellow at all (the slight yellow color is due to the yellow coating as shown in the picture a few posts back).

And age indeed seems to play a role. The S-M-C (which is the youngest of the three) exhibits the least yellowing.

Finally got my own copy of the 50mm f/1.4 Super-Takumar (8 elements).

Shot with the 85mm f/4.5 Ultra-Achromatic Takumar, so definitely 100% on topic :))
