Since the canyon is so immense, i used only the 18 - 30mm range on my 18-135 lens - I needed the wide angle to get the scope of the canyon. I did use the 135 end for some wildlife pictures, including some of the condors when they showed up over the rim. As far as filters, I used a circular polarizing filter for all these shots to give definition to the sky and clouds. Beyond that, be prepared for lots of people, and enjoy your trip.
