Nice test. No real cause for concern, but also no real reason to upgrade since noise performance of the K-1 is already very good. I think the difference doesn't justify the investment. Maybe with hand held pixelshift and improved AF tracking in the equation for some people it will.

No i don't I think the noise in the K-1 file just increases the perception of contrast

Another comparison with standard Pentax sharpening and NR applied (instead of dpreviews no software nr or sharpening approach) iso 51200:

What detail is lost here?

They nullify Pentax's standard raw adjustments in lightroom and apply their own WB and exposure compensation. First pic is wat DPReview shows us, second is what is loaded into lightroom by default with noise and sharpness adjustments:

Both bad. 12800 is not for 1:1 viewing. At least nr reduces jpeg size.

They were shot with different lenses. Anything near the side is going to be softer on the K-1 Thats why I took an a sample near the center with lots of detail. The D FA 50 2.8 used on the K-1 II seems a bit decentered on the right side though.

Noisier files are larger. noise is information.

There is a difference:

At iso 800 the k-1 appears sharper, while at iso 100 the K-1 II appears sharper (due to the D fa 50 2.8 instead of the FA 77) I don't think it matters as much hat higher iso's because sharpness is already eaten op by noise more, filtered or not. By iso 3200 i have a hard time choosing. Let's hope Ricoh is able to adjust the firmware so we can select the point at which nr kicks in (if at all). Since it is only applied from a certain point, i think that point must be able to be influenced through firmware. Then it is a best of both worlds situation.

On the plus side. The D FA 50mm F2.8 macro makes the K-1 II beat the crap out of the competition where it comes to sharpness.

Especially noticable on the sides where the FA 77 they tested the K-1 with is soft (by design).

Can no longer take that site seriously. One of the staff is a notorious Sony fanboy with a much too high opinion of himself.
