Of course, with it being their item that was on loan to you, there should have been no duty anyway, I would have thought. Sometimes this stuff makes no sense.

Ouch!

These two sites may have been useful:
Import Duty Calculator - SimplyDuty

For which you need the HS code:
See HS code list: what is it and how to lookup your product?

I would have guessed, this would be the code:
9001 - 9033 Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof

Shipping to South Africa has become problematic of late. Their mailing service has long been a bit of a disaster - it's now ground to almost a complete standstill for international mail. So much so that New Zealand Post refuses mail to South Africa.

You can still ship there using DHL, but that's one of few options at the moment. So, if any of you send stuff to South Africa, my advice is use DHL. It's expensive but at least it works.

Yes, you're right. Certainly, I usually take over the shipping completely. What I do is ship to a USA forwarding company who then ship to me and bill me.

Of course, that's entirely up to you. :)

That is certainly unusual in so far as shipping is usually quoted up to and including delivery in the other country. For example, USPS shipping costs from the USA to me in NZ includes the cost of NZ Post's delivery on my side.

Yes, and if those "extra fees" are the duty and tax, (as I have stated in my previous post) then the buyer needs to pay those before the shipper is legally allowed to continue the shipment to the buyer.
This is all perfectly normal. The buyer should have known or should have been prepared to educate himself. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.

Here's a link to an easy Canadian duty calculator: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/dte-acl/est-cal-eng.html

Again, it's not hard.

Correct. It's not hard. The complications are all on the buyer's end where, depending on the jurisdiction, there may be import duty and/or GST to pay, prior to Customs releasing the item to the local courier / mail service for delivery.
