In that range, I absolutely recommend a K 300mm f/4. It's a bargain for that distance and speed. Here are a few I took with this lens on a K100D.
First is Sheryl Crow from about 50 meters away at the (indoor) Houston Rodeo:
Next is Billy Andrade from about 20 meters away at the Houston Open:
If you get the exposure right, you'll get some nice shots. Otherwise, you can get some weird chromatic abberations or fringing. Still, for the money, you can get that speed and distance for that price.
