The 70-200 Tamron does go to 0.3x magnification. It's not macro, but it's pretty close! Here's a butterfly at full tilt, his head is smaller than most rings by a long way. Full size on Flickr so you can see the detail:

Here's my wife's fingers at less than max magnification, it seems more than good enough for a ring shot!

Also, the Tamron renders just so beautifully. Here's my highest explored photo ever with the Tamron, it was pretty dark in the room but it rendered my Golden's features beautifully.
