Very, very nice! What a great lens for shooting into the sun this is. Or even stars occasionally ;)

Second one is my favourite - lovely shot!

The on-board flash certainly doesn't cause a shadow of the lens, like it does with physically bigger lenses.

The only way of covering the angle of view with flash though is to use a flash diffuser. I must admit that on the rare occasion I do use flash with the DA15mm, I tend to use my Metz AF 48 with a diffuser "sock" on it, and even then, I usually bounce it off the ceiling if indoors. That just about covers the field of view.

I don't think the on-board flash covers anywhere near the field of view needed, and even if you do fit a diffuser on it, it is not very strong.

One thing I find fascinating about this wonderful lens is this:

If you look at the photos above, from me, and from several others, you will see the ones shot directly into the sun. Now count the "rays" around the sun - 14. But the DA 15mm lens has an iris diaphragm of 7 blades....

So presumably we're seeing some sort of interpolated reflections that appears to double the number of "rays". I suspect the longer "rays" are the real iris blades, while the shorter ones are reflections.

Maybe it has something to do with the physics of this lens, and why this lens is by far the best I own at shooting directly into the sun. And I own a lot of lenses...!

Does anyone have any insight as to where those reflections are coming from (perhaps the rear glass element?) and why this lens handles sun shots so well?

Just got home from the photo course up on Hamilton Island (in the Whitsunday Island group, Barrier Reef). Here are 4 shots all taken with the DA15mm, of the yacht club building:

Just to make the point, following the nice things said about B & H above, that Adorama is the other place in the USA that we Aussies can get great service.

I've had outstanding service from Adorama, excellent prices, and very rapid delivery.

I believe that both Adorama and B & H are supportive of this forum, too.

Meanwhile, I'm off to the Hamilton Island "Away" photographic course in 5 days time. A week of workshops, mock wedding and all, portraiture, landscapes (including aerial from helicopters) and underwater on the Barrier Reef. It was a birthday present from my lovely wife. She's coming too, but only to swan around the pool with champagne and a book :)

This is the course:

Whitsundays Photography Events & Workshop - Hamilton Island Great Barrier Reef

I'm looking forward to it just a bit... ;)

And yes - my DA15mm will be there....

Sheesh Jay - do you EVER take a bad photo? I really don't know how you do it - turn everyday ordinary scenes into a photographic smorgasbord. Those shots are, as usual, outstanding, and I agree with JHD about the one he likes too.

The classic example of how it's not how much gear you have or what gear you have - you just MUST have the 'eye' and the brain to make it work like you do.

Brilliant stuff!

Great shot, dgaies !! Love the left ear trailing across the floor :)

Are you perhaps suggesting that this thread go to sleep now? I hope not, actually, as this lens continues to impress me greatly, not just my own copy, but also the wonderful photos many of you guys put up here.

Jay may have started what ends up as the longest thread on Pentax Forums - and long may it continue. :)

I even tried wearing a solid lead hat, thinking that tinfoil would be way too thin.

Result: a severe headache, and a new DA15mm..... ;)

@Amaurosis - love that nick!

For those not in the medical field, it may be a bit of a blind spot though .... ;)

Seems like a few DA 15mm lenses have been purchased because of this thread. Any more?

Oh yes - for those worried about spouses and stuff, just try the old "Oh this old thing? I've had this for years" trick. You know - like my wife does with her shoes.... ;)

Jay - I sure hope you're on a commission from Pentax...! ;) just kidding - I wonder, though, how many people who read this forum have actually gone out and bought a DA15mm purely on account of this thread that you started?

Count me as one.... who else?

Very nice indeed, Doug. Numbers 2 and 3 - are they HDR or coloured grad filters? Or is the sky really like that in Maine? ;)

All great shots - love 'em.

Jay - your skill and vision demonstrated in your photos is outstanding! I've been admiring your stuff since I first joined this forum, along with many others' in here.
Thank you.

Now - my wife may not thank you, but my DA15 arrived today!! Fresh in a box from Adorama - good quick service.

I'm hoping to get out and about this weekend and give it a workout, along with the other recent acquisition, the DA35 Macro Ltd.

Woohoo - roll on weekend :)

OK - problem solved. I've got the DA15 on order from Adorama, and will add it to my collection of LTDs - the 31, the 35, and the 70.

So there ya go - decision made - no more problem. It's the only way to make the problem go away when afflicted with LBA and also having the wherewithal to indulge it.

Now I just have to make the decision as to WHICH lens I actually put on the camera - the Siggy 10-20 or the DA15... hmmm - MORE decisions.! ;)

Now I'm sure this has been asked MANY times before, but this seems as good a place as any....

Given that I already have a Sigma 10-20mm (the older model) which I find very impressive (I think I got a good one), is there any significant advantage or improvement in getting DA15 as a prime, in addition to the Sigma 10-20?

I do suffer from LBA (don't we all?) and I can afford to get the DA15 if there is deemed to be an advantage by the collective wisdom of you lot... ;)

Or would it be better just to stick the Sigma on the K20D when I go walkabout in the city, which is what I've been doing up until now?

All suggestions appreciated, as long as they're anatomically feasible :)

B&H's demand for my CC and Licence was a couple of years ago - I posted about it on here.

It was because I didn't have a purchasing history with them (the old Catch-22).

I cancelled my order, and had a "full and frank" email exchange with them over the ridiculous system. In today's climate of ID theft and fraud, sending my CC complete with photocopy of my signature, plus my Drivers Licence with full address, signature, details, date of birth - the lot - would be an open invitation. Not by B&H themselves, but anyone who saw or intercepted the details.

It sounds like they've changed their system now, if they are not asking for photocopies of the CC and Drivers Licence. I may try ordering something from them again, and see what happens.

@nulla: how do you order from Amazon? Every time I go to one of their hardware pages for anything, there is a notice telling me that they cannot ship to my area. I had been led to believe that they won't sell stuff like camera gear outside the US - or at least to Australia.....

And B & H won't be getting my business as long as they require a photocopy of my drivers licence to be sent over to them, along with both sides of my credit card. How insecure is that? My ID complete with photo, plus ALL my credit card details including my signature and the security number off the card. May as well just send them the licence and card and tell 'em to go for it...! I've never been asked to do that before or since, so I cancelled quite a large order I was placing with them.

And of course - don't forget you'd be up for GST if your import gets sprung by Customs coming into Australia. It's unlikely, but it has happened to me once with a fly-fishing reel I bought from the US - the reel cost about $US350 ($Aus800 here) but I got stung for another $55 in GST and "Admin costs".....!
