Confessions of a Toy Camera Shooter....Confess Here!

The closest I've ever come to my dream shot of a pony filling the disc of the rising moon. Another fraction of a second and I might have got it. But then some goddam lardass landwhale with a fancy Canon hanging round his quivering neck flab walked right in front of me and filled half the frame with his wobbling Hawaiian shirt clad blubberiness. May the dark gods of cardiac arrest smite upon him soon.

Edit: With the Lumix TZ70, by the way. . .

Thanks Paul. I think I'd rather be getting CCD colours like you're getting from your LX3 though. The colours out of my little lo-res Optio W30 with its CCD sensor are much nicer than the ones from the TZ70 with its CMOS.

At the moment I've got my eyes out for a Ricoh Caplio GX100. I'm thinking that one of them would suit me just fine.:)

Some recent TZ70 snaps. Still loving the freedom of walking around with a tiny little camera in my pocket that can handle 90% of the photos I'll ever want to take, at a quality level that I'm personally quite content with.:)

This next one was an experiment in shooting jpeg rather than raw, but I think I prefer the flexibility of raw.

With the TZ70. This was while I was using the TZ70 as a light meter as I was shooting film with my K1000, but it'll be interesting to see how it compares to the film when it's developed.:)

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about the SX100 compared to the A1200, and as always I really wish we had something like CHDK for the old Pentax compacts. I think my little Optio W30 might possibly produce fantastic raw files if it were given the chance.

And it's great to hear that you're in the habit of passing on these types of "cheap as chips" cameras to your local charity shop when you've finished with them. I've been doing that myself for the past few years, and I think the K-m that I got back in December will be in Oxfam's hands before too long.:)

Thanks Mike. The Daymark is a mighty thing, and I should really make the effort to go there more often and perhaps get a photo with a tiny human in there for scale.

Last week, while showing my sister from NY some of the sights around here, I shot the TZ70 and the K-m alongside each other -- and in every case I prefer the results from the TZ70. So I expect the K-m's days are numbered, in the same way that the TZ70 led to me getting rid of the K-S1.

That suits me fine, as lately I've been getting much more pleasure from doing my SLR photography with a film camera rather than digital. And the TZ70 makes a great light meter too, letting me visually confirm the exposure settings to transfer over to my K1000!:)

A couple with the TZ70 from last week. The ruined Holy Trinity church in Buckfastleigh, and the Daymark near Kingswear.

Thanks, Mike. I have to confess that the moon shot was actually a blue afternoon sky made to look black with a strong red filter in Silver Efex, so there wasn't any sort of tricky exposure involved. I just used program mode and judged how it looked in the EVF.:o

With the TZ70. Yes, there would have been a bit less noise and a bit more detail with a 400mm lens on a DSLR. No, I wouldn't have happened to have a DSLR with a 400mm lens in my jacket pocket.:)

That looks great, and it shows how truly beautiful the colour rendering is from the TZ70 (even though it's a CMOS). Admittedly, noise at anything above base ISO is the one weakness of that wonderful little camera, but I'm starting to think of it in the way I used to think of the grain from higher ISO films and now it doesn't bother me as much. I think it's just a question of letting go of the idea that a modern digital camera should be able to produce surgically clean results at ISO sixty-five-million (or even ISO 400).:)

And of course Boo Boo should have a throne. How could any feline be expected to repose upon anything less?:)

I got back to where my car was parked at the end of an afternoon's walk and happened to meet a bloke out exercising his parrots. As one does.

With the TZ70.

A couple with the Lumix TZ70 from a walk around Burrator. These are both scenes that I've shot a few times before with DSLRs, and I have to say that the results from the TZ70 stand up very well against the bigger cameras.:)

Some test shots with the Lumix TZ70 that I was given for my birthday last week. What a fantastic little camera! I'm going to be using this thing a lot.:)

At first I thought the big brown curly thing next to the port-a-potty was. . . well I won't say.

Here's another one with the Canon A1200 and CHDK. I'm going to have to stop playing around with this little camera, because it renders colours so beautifully that it's giving me sinful thoughts about maybe getting hold of a first generation Canon 5D. I've always liked photos that I've seen from that old full-framer.

Well, in my defence the McLaren has only got a tiny little letterbox of a rear window, and I was a bit distracted by the glamour model in the passenger seat.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

(Actually, my crappy old Ford Fiesta was very competently parked just down the street.)

With the A1200 and CHDK again, with the A1200 now custom profiled to correct the colours in the raw files. A McLaren 570S in Tavistock.

Thanks Mike. My feeling at the moment is that if I could find something like an A1200 but with an APS-C sensor and a better viewfinder I could happily use it as my main camera. I'm deeply bored with the whole DSLR routine right now, and I'm looking back on the days when the A1200 was my only digital camera with quite a lot of nostalgia.

Thanks Paul. I should have made it clear that it was me who bricked the A1200 by dismantling it to try to clean a nasty spot off the sensor. CHDK is completely safe to use, since all you're doing is running it from a bootable SD card and no permanent changes are made to the camera. I've edited the original post to make it clearer.:)

Playing around with CHDK on another Canon A1200 after I bricked the last one by dismantling it to clean the sensor. Meanwhile the utterly rotten weather persists.

You're getting great results with the LX3, Paul. I think it would be almost the perfect CCD compact for me except for the one problem of not having a viewfinder. The only way I've ever been able to shoot using any sort of live view screen is with a loupe attached to the camera, and once you add one of those it isn't a compact anymore.:(

My favourite of all the digital compacts I've ever used is the Canon A1200, but sadly mine is bricked (my own fault) and I haven't replaced it yet.
