You want roads? They don't come any longer than this. You can follow this road until it disappears at the foot of the distant mountains. Taken in 1971 with my Yashica 5000 and Kodachrome in what was then North Transvaal, South Africa. The slide, projected, supplies the greatest possible detail. It was scanned with my K5. A larger scan is available on the Flicker page, with a click.

Yes, Ford Escort. It served us well as a rental. No A/C or extras though.

This was Africa at the most pristine when there was still wildlife a plenty. Leopards were in the mountains behind our house, and Most of the continent was still under colonial rule. The picture is of a main road.
Forty years later I took this picture in the same area and one can see the road is wider and not so isolated. I suppose one had to be born there to feel the country and its vistas in one's bones.

This picture has always fascinated me. It was taken in the early forties, on the road from Rustenberg to Thabazimbi, a mining town we lived in shortly after I was born. The land still was very much a wilderness back then.

We flew from Johannesburg to Capetown, and rented I think a Ford Escort to tour the rest of South Africa. I had lived there before, but left in 1961. It was a different world back then. My last visit was 1981 and I could no longer recognise many things. These days, the gap is wider than the Roman Empire is from today's Rome.

Scan with a cheap photo scanner. This is a road not far from Pretoria, that we took to visit the house of Boer War General and President, Jan Smuts. Taken in 1968 on Kodachrome, Retinette 1A

Thanks, I am always interested in the changes in SA. It was a very different place in the past. I liken it to the relevance of the current Rome, to the Roman Empire. One can visit the same geographic location, but not the time,
