It's only "active" in the sense that the camera detects when it's needed. Pentax HC does that, too, if set to "Auto" so it really isn't different in that regard. As has been stated many times in this thread, these cameras simply underexpose the image after which the tone curve can be corrected for the underexposure on everything that isn't already on the bright end. This is performed automatically on in-camera JPEGs. Software that detects the special tag in the RAW files will correct the tone curve on those RAWs, too. This is why software that doesn't detect (or know what to do with) the RAW tag will simply display an underexposed image.when loading the RAW file.

A very practical approach you outlined. Additionally, the theater may be able to provide Charles with a white balance temperature that he can set on the camera ahead of time.

You seem to be asking for a feature that doesn't exist on any camera ever sold by any manufacturer, including Nikon. Maybe that's why no one has answered your question to complete satisfaction. I do agree with you on your last point about continuing this thread.

Charles, how is this fundamentally different than Pentax's implementation of Highlight Correction? Yes, Pentax cameras are changing the exposure at the time of capture when it's detected that it needs to do so (obviously only if you set HC to On). Accomplished by altering ISO.

Of course it's digital... it's a digital camera. And,yes, HC underexposes the RAW file by one stop via reduced ISO when needed. I have probably a hundred RAW files on my computer where Aperture doesn't detect the HC tag that are all exactly underexposed by one stop. Lightroom fortunately recognizes the tag and boost the RAW file exposure back up. It's the Pentax in-camera JPEG engine that restores the exposure except for the brightest spots. It works exactly the same on Pentax and Canon cameras.

All recent and current Pentax cameras have this feature. Just turn on Highlight Correction in the menu system. If needed, the camera will clandestinely underexpose by 1 stop via changing the ISO downward by 1 stop, though it won't report that in the EXIF. Hope that helps.

You have extreme differences between dark and light in that scene. It probably makes sense to dial in some negative exposure compensation because you're more concerned with protecting the bright areas than the dark.
