I'm very sad that my other camera has "Nikon" on the front, but at the time I wanted a lot of megapixels, so what could I do? Come on Ricoh, give me a Pentax full frame so I can be clean again!

Don't get me wrong: I am sad that Pentax couldn't make it on their own. I was sad when Hoya took it over, but perhaps my sadness was tinged with a bit of relief when Ricoh bought the camera division from them, as Hoya didn't seem to include the Pentax camera brand in their long-term plans. What would have made me even sadder would have been if Pentax had died on the vine, and no-one made K-mount cameras any more. That would have left me with a lot of lenses, and a few hard choices.

Out of interest, is anyone so Pentax pure that they wouldn't have a lens with "Tokina" or "Sigma" or even "Takumar" on the front of their camera? Isn't that "diluting the brand"?

I do understand where you're coming from. Mention has been made also of Nikon which is apparently owned by Mitsubishi. Again, they do not put their name on the camera. But I think the difference is that unlike Hoya or Mitsubishi (I'm not sure who owns Leica Camera), Ricoh made cameras before they bought Pentax. I'm not saying that Ricoh couldn't have kept Pentax as a separate brand, like Toyota/Lexus, but they evidently have chosen not to do so. That this upsets some loyal Pentaxians, I fully comprehend. I would have preferred it to stay "pure" Pentax, but I'm buying a K-3 regardless. With my investment in lenses, the K mount is equally, if not more, important to me than the name on the camera body. And yes, I'm an old fogey too - I'm sure that the K-3 will well outlast me (but that won't stop me buying cameras).

Aren't all Panasonic cameras branded "Lumix"? If so, it's not quite the same.

On the one hand, Ricoh putting its name on the back of the Pentax doesn't worry me too much. Its their brand now, after all. On the other hand, it makes me wonder how Ricoh will treat the Pentax name in the longer term. Will they keep it as an "up-market" brand, in the manner of Lexus? Most people know that Lexus is a Toyota brand, but you don't see a Toyota badge on a Lexus (I don't think). One certainly doesn't see a BMW badge on a Rolls-Royce. There is, in my view, a subtle difference between "Pentax by Ricoh" and a "Ricoh Pentax".

It's not a Ricoh K-3: if one wants to be pedantic, it's a Ricoh Pentax K-3. I guess I'm just happy that Ricoh was able to buy the Pentax name, after all, Hoya still make medical equipment under the Pentax banner, and could have decided to keep it to themselves. Look what happened to Minolta.

I never use the "Pentax" strap either, in case my camera gets stolen. I use a "Canon" strap instead! :D

Chinon also did some well-specced K-mount cameras. I owned a couple, as they were very good value, and the main attraction was that they could take Pentax lenses. I started with M42 cameras - Zenit, Cosina and a Chinon Memotron (anyone remember those?), and that is what made me aware of the Pentax brand, as Takumars were among the best lenses one could buy in that mount. I couldn't afford a real Pentax in those days. Later, I bought a P30 and my joy was unbounded!

Sorry to ramble, but I suppose my point is that while I love Pentax, and want it long to continue as a brand, the mount has always been the main attraction for me. I am, in fact, happy to see "Ricoh" on the camera, as it means that the company are proud to be associated with it, and are committed to the brand. And you are right, Lauren, to speculate that it may bring some Ricohnians into the Pentax fold.
