I believe that there was an external pack, but good luck finding one. Probably easier to find a regular pack and wire it up as a dummy with an external battery at the right voltage if you really need to work in the cold for extended periods.

Was the ME F new in box? I don't think I've ever seen a used black body without any brassing.

The f/1.4 and f/1.7 F and FA 50mm lenses are excellent, but optically you will see very little to no difference from the M and A versions of the same lenses. What you are paying for is the convenience of autofocus and aperture control through the camera body at the expense of build quality, a worse manual focus feel, and a significantly higher purchase price.

You might pick up an M 50mm f/1.7 for $40 to 50 if you don't have a high quality fast 50 already and then wait for the right autofocus 50mm to show up. About once a year I see a grossly under priced F 50mm f/1.7 included with a camera body in the sub $100 range but I haven't been fast enough to pick one up yet.

Back when the FA 50mm f/1.4 was $200 new and the F 50mm f/1.7 went for $120 to $150 they were a much more attractive buy. I don't think that the FA 50mm f/1.4 at $250 to 300 and the F 50mm f/1.7 at $200 are unreasonable given their capabilities but the price does make you think a bit more about how much you want or need autofocus.

The viewfinder on the SF1 should be large enough that manual focus isn't too painful for slow moving and stationary subjects

A thin veneer may bend enough to go around the sides of the body. You might need to back it with something to give enough depth and possibly to soften out the angle of the bends. I had thought of using something like bamboo (sort of like the flooring, lots of parallel slats), possibly using multiple pieces fit together to go around corners. Veneer can also potentially be fit together in multiple segments to make it around sharp corners.

You will probably find that you get better contrast and less lens flare by using a lens hood with that Takumar-A zoom. The ME in black is a nice looking body.

It looks like I was mis-recalling a manual. Some of the lower end MZ-XX film bodies (MZ-30, MZ-60) won't work at all with lenses that lack A settings.

Yes. Some bodies will not meter light correctly if they do not support stop down metering. You can always shoot in manual and use a separate light meter if necessary.

I think that means you have a cookie on your computer that is setting the default language to something other than english, probably from being linked to a foreign language Flickr page at some point. If you clear your cookies and visit the english language Flickr home page, or if you go to a Flickr page and change the language to english it should fix your problem.

Quick photo of my most recent film camera:

I'll probably end up liquidating some 35mm bodies to make room for it.

@ aafuss - I'd suggest picking up a cheap wide angle lens hood for that 28-80mm Takumar zoom if you are intending to use it much. I have a copy of the identical in all but name (non SMC) Pentax 28-80mm and it tends to flare and lose contrast in certain lighting conditions without one.

Yes, cute. If the first roll turns out I'll try to come up with a nameplate to go over the "Pentax" or "Asahi" lettering. I have a welder's metal punch kit but it is missing a couple of letters and I can't recall off hand what they are.

New to me ME and M 50mm f/1.7

The only reason it lasted long enough for me to find it was a shattered filter jammed on the lens. People had been trying to get it off for days and passing on the set when they couldn't budge it. I bought the set anyways for a very good body only price and had the filter off in 5 minutes at home with proper tools.

That Vivitar is one boxy camera - almost reminiscent of a Kiev 60. Any idea who built it for Vivitar?

Looks like a ZX-L (Americanized MZ-6) to me.

Yes, the MZ-3 was a good way to top the MZ-5n. I picked mine up on Saturday afternoon and with the battery grip non-functional I wasn't able to test it or take any pictures on the way home - $25 for a pair of CR2s would have been more than I paid for the body. I actually went to the sale hoping to find a Super Program but the 2 bodies in stock were both badly brassed and had a significant amount of rust on their steel parts. I really don't know how much I'll end up using the MZ-5n but I wanted something that I could use with DA lenses in at least Tv and program mode. The ability to use screwdrive AF is a bonus.

I'll see your ZX-5n and raise you an MZ-5n with FG grip:

One of Canada's largest photo chains has been running a clearance sale at their used/ clearance store. Most of the lenses worth owning are still priced somewhere between high and absurd, but film bodies and accessories were dirt cheap ($20/ body or 3 for $55, beat up kit lenses at $10, etc.). I spotted this body in a sea of plastic Canons and Nikons (with the odd Minolta and SF series Pentax mixed in). I would have picked up a Super Program too but the available specimens were in pretty ugly condition.

The grip was the price of a CR2 at the main store because it was non functional despite the condition being given as 8.5/10 - after stripping it apart at home and cleaning the contacts it's running fine now.

I still need to run a test roll of film through the camera but so far it seems functional. The one deal I'll be kicking myself over skipping if I ever buy an MZ-S was an open box grip marked down to $40 from $300, but with no way of testing it I wasn't willing to take a chance.

I think the KX makes a pretty good compromise for a manual body. They don't show up as often but they seem to sell for less than an MX in similar condition despite having most of the same features. An added bonus for me was that the ever ready case from my K1000 fits nicely and I like the larger body size.

An LX would have been nice too, but they usually go for more than I'm willing to spend right now. For shooting in sunlight I prefer a needle style light meter to LEDs and I don't really have any desire for accessories like a motor drive (though interchangeable viewfinders would be interesting to try out, if expensive).

About the only thing that I would have liked on the KX is a user changeable focusing screen and I probably only would have used that feature once to put in a split prism screen.

By no means all of my film gear, but these are some of the most used items. I bought the KX so that I could retire my K1000 and I switch the Super Tak 50mm f/1.4 and an FA 50mm f/1.4 back and forth between my film and digital bodies. I also have 2 Vivitar 285s that can be used with any of my bodies.

Recently I've been shooting either Fuji Superia 400 (because it is available everywhere) or Ilford XP2 (because I'm not set up to develop my own B&W right now and it scans well).
