Best mm for full body portrait shots?

The focal length you choose depends quite a bit on how far away you can/want to be from your subject. It's possible to get good results with a relatively wide lens if you're space constrained indoors. If you have lots of space and want serious background separation you could use something in the 135 to 200mm range outdoors. 50 to 70mm or longer is certainly usable for indoor full body portraits if you have a bit of space. As an example I used to regularly shoot large group portraits in a gymnasium with a 50mm lens with room to spare.

If you have an 18-55 or similar try framing some shots in that range and see if they give the look you want.
