Beside the diffraction paterns, the atmosphere is not a steady medium. Air is circulating in many directions, depending of altitude, and the light pass is nothing like a perfectly straight line. Also, there is dust, ice cristals, and these gases, with different refraction index, which make the light to bend and scatter even more. Anyone can see the star twinkling with his eyes, and this is a result of all these phenomena.

In a long exposure, this twinkle are translated in movements of the stars images in any direction, all recorded by the camera, and finally forming a round ball of light, bigger or smaller, depending on the luminosity of the star. You can clearly see that the bigger star twinkle much more than the small ones. That's because the scattered light from the small stars is to little for the eye, or the sensor, to give a circle of the same size.

Wow. Congrats.

It's a realization, for a picture taken with a DSLR to be among a lot of shots taken with dedicated astro cameras, with lot of stacked exposures and postprocessing. Pentax could choose your picture for their advertising.

@seti_v2. It looks very well. Just this night I have made the difference between your pictures and another one taken through a 3.5nm Baader filter, with a QHY9 camera, and yours is OK. Keep the good work.

Baader reinforced 3,5 nm H-Alfa

Just scroll down for the picture.

From my very short experience as an astrophotographer, but from my very old experience as a moderator of an astronomy forum, I can tell you this. First, try your skills from your background, whatever it is, Learn the very fastidious PP of the astrophoto, and then, go to a good site. Otherwise, you could be much disappointed.

I also have a C8 from Celestron, but my location is far from good.

For focusing try a Bahtinov Mask. You can find different sizes in astronomy stores. It's the best way to achieve focus on stars.

Very interesting.

I don't do astrophoto, but I have some friends who does. And two years ago, I thought if that something alike can be done, photographing the sky with a Sodium pass filter, and a Mercury pass filter, and than extracting the light pollution in Sodium and Mercury, exactly in the same way you did.

I didn't have those filters to try this, but I still think it can be done.

Yes, there are a lot of good astrophotos in this thread and also in others. Maybe someone from Pentax will see it and will consider that this field need some attention. I just saw some picture on the Sky & Telescope magazine, from the Science Imaging and Astronomy exhibition from Pierce college, and I've seen Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji booth there, but no Pentax.

Good picture. And very natural, exactly as I saw it in a very clear winter night through my telescope, high in the mountain. Congrats.

@Eric Seavey, Thanks a lot.

For sure, lunar photography belongs here. And the result is good, regarding the lens used.

So, it's like what Baader and Hutech are doing for Canon. Very good. I didn't know that is possible for Pentax. Thank you.

The shot looks good. And because I have a 12'' f4 mirror, and I want to built a body this summer for it, I'm very interested. I know there is a MPCC Mark II, and Mark III. What type is yours?

Wow. Some impressive photos on your site. To bad that many lenses have so much coma wide open. I have tried some with a Pentax M 50/2, but I have to close it to f5.6 to get rid of that coma. Now, I just wait for some good nights to test a Sigma EX 50/1.4.

About the tracking platform, I will choose the iOptron. One reason can be found in a detailed review made by one of the must trusted Sky & Telescope authors, Dennis Di Cicco, review you can find on the iOptron page

https://www.ioptron.com/index.cfm?select=productdetails&phid=febb7d36-d904-4...0-41a6103fae86

The other one, is that sooner or latter you will need longer exposure than those which can be offered by the Pentax O'GPS, which, by the way, is good, and cheap, but has his limits.

Valy, good picture of ISS transit.

gs2c, great nebula's picture, especially The Veil.

Billium28, TopherTheMe, Stone G. tonypysm, beautiful pictures.

You all created a page of delights.

I've missed some one? Yes, i missed a lot.
