I think you need a nice macro lens instead.

Here are my photos with this lens on Flickr. Some specific images:

Mmmmmm Mocha

Lough Derg Way 2

This was in my first lens purchase (after the body kit). I think it has exemplary rendering, but I do not favour the focal length. For this reason it stays at home in favour of the FA77 and I lose out on using a fantastic lens. Then again I can now say I have good to excellent 24, 28, 35, 43, 55, 77 and 105mm lenses, plus the 16-45 zoom, so it faces a lot of competition!

No-one who needs the focal length could be disappointed by the FA43.

"Then I'd be a fool to think any different."*

The 43 pops even when stopped down. :D

The FA43 has an amazing 3D pop to the images that I can sometimes recognise cold. I love the way it renders but wish it had a smaller focal length as it's too long on digital... or not long enough.

The 43mm indeed has something special and is faster than the 40mm. I think that's the main draw. Plus it works on full frame.

Note the lovely way the background texture, the wine glass stem and the bubbles have rendered.

This shot needed the extra speed. Photographing dancers in the dark is not easy!

I've had similar luck, Ben, most recently when my FA77 arrived.

Have fun shooting! I find the 43mm focal length is just right for group photos though if it focused closer I'd use it more for still lifes as well.

I don't think it's a very even comparison. The FA43 has these advantages:
 • more than a stop faster

 • greater resolution*

 • works on full frame body

 • better size for manual focus

 • slightly less vignetting

 • screw-on hood and cap, which work perfectly and look amazing

 • comes in silver

* Not less, as was remarked above. Compare the Photozone 43mm test with the 40mm test. For f/2.8 and smaller the FA43 has the advantage. At f/1.9 the resolution is much less good than at f/2.8, but has the nice characteristic of highlighting the center of the frame. This can be used artistically. In any case the DA40 cannot open up this wide, so there's no comparing the two on this point.

Disadvantages:
 • significant lateral CA

 • the price

The lack of quick focus might be considered a disadvantage except that I wouldn't want to try accurately focusing the DA40.

Since CA is easily corrected I really think there is no intrinsic reason not to get the FA43. So I did. :)

On the other hand the DA40 is also an outstanding lens and any differences I take the pains to highlight above are nit-picking. Except sometimes you just need the extra light.

I have both the 16-45 and the 43mm limited. It's interesting how I choose what lens to go out with, since sometimes I walkaround with the 43mm. Which I also use for fast shooting indoors of course. For me it depends more on what subjects I expect to shoot. If urban 'scapes then the wide zoom. If cute flowers with blurred background then the 43mm.

My completely subjective comparison second-hand through posted photos and comments led me to the 43mm. Besides it's a limited -- the FA 50 cannot touch it for appealing build.

This one is 800 but the included image is the smaller size from the gallery. Is there any way to link to the proper size?

I think my RAW conversion strips the EXIF already. This one was: ISO 400, 1/1000s, f/1.9, multi-segment. Is there a good free copy'n'paste EXIF tool around? Would be nice to have it on the context menu in Explorer.

Oh. The 43mm rocks. Just in case anyone doubted.

Within minutes of getting my 43mm I was shooting off pictures. Met up with my singer and actor (and my lovely partner) Susannah Clare in town as we were on our way to different places, and in the midst of much blowing wind I shot off a few very quick shots... with barely time to focus. I hope to do a lot of these off-the-cuff shots to get a feel for the lens.

I am not so used to portrait shots but will be doing more now I have this lens. I do prefer natural light and hand-held work for a "real" feel. This is a simple RAW conversion with no correction or touch-ups beyond some histogram work. Any advice on what I have here? I would really appreciate advice from the experts. Should I do some touch-up work or try to set the scene differently? (I will wait for less blowing hair in wind next time!)

On a practical note, should I post larger images or is this enough to evaluate?
