It is interesting how a squirrel has stored a black walnut for future access.

More forest shots with K-10 and Leica 35-70 f 4.0 macro.
The last photo shows an uprooted tree with its roots toward the bank. Our little creek has lots of these trees which have been undercut by the erosion effects of the water. However, this particular tree is different as our resident wild mink has made its den in between the creek bank and the roots of the fallen tree.

A few shots in the woods of our place with K-10 and the Leica 35-70mm vario-Elmar-R f 4.0 macro, my favorite vintage zoom lens. The back part of our land is covered with black walnut trees, and they produce bushels of nuts every year. The nuts are difficult to shell, and I have never really bothered with them. However, they provide an ample food supply for our resident squirrel population.

Une Grenouille vit un bœuf
Qui lui sembla de belle taille.
Elle qui n'était pas grosse en tout comme un œuf,
Envieuse s'étend, et s'enfle, et se travaille
Pour égaler l'animal en grosseur,
Disant : Regardez bien, ma sœur ;
Est-ce assez ? dites-moi ; n'y suis-je point encore ?
— Nenni. — M'y voici donc ?
Translation of La Fontaine's classic verse:
The Frog Who Would Be as Big as an Ox
A Frog had an Ox in her view;
His bulk, to her, appeared ideal.
She, not even as large, all in all, as an egg hitherto,
Envious, stretched, swelled, strained, in her zeal
To match the beast in overall size,
Saying, "Sister, lend me your eyes.
Is this enough? Am I not yet there, in every feature?"
"Nope." "Then now?" "No way." "There now, as good as first?"
"You’re not anywhere near." The diminutive creature
Inflated still more, till she burst.
The world is full of folk who are as far from being sages.
Every city gent would build chateaux like Louis Quatorze;
Every petty prince names ambassadors,
Every marquis wants to have pages.

I had two nice batches of morels this season.The whole family loves them. I also had a nice cream of mushroom soup with a slightly over mature pheasant back. You can very safely add pheasant back to your mushroom repertoire.

The second photo is "pheasant back," deliciously edible mushroom, though this one is overly mature and tough. You can still put it in a blender with some water and make a puree for some excellent mushroom soup.

Today I found a couple of morels and one nice pheasantback mushroom along the creek in the back of our place. These are very tasty sauteed gently in unsalted butter and (if you like) a clove of fresh crushed garlic.

Photos of Gravel Creek, the little stream that forms the back border of our wooded country property. This creek gradually changes its course through our part of the northern hardwood forest by undercutting the bank and trees during periods of high water flow.
KIT: K-1 with medium format lens Mamiya 645 C 120mm f 4.0 macro, used with Mamiya to K-1 adapter.

The creek at the back of our country place offers the opportunity of observing the effects of flowing water upon the course of the stream and upon the fauna growing along side of it. The flowing water forces changes in the shape and direction of the streambed and leaves leaning and dead trees in its wake. There must be some fungus somewhere in these photos!
