Very interesting discussion, but simply a variation on the old theme of weight versus flexibility in field equipment. Clearly what is required is a new lens with an extensive array of capabilities. The forthcoming Pentax D FA 18-600mm f 1.2 macro (AF, IF, AS, WR) lens holds promise. Lens designers are still working on weight problems, however, as well as an internal motor powerful enough for auto-focusing.

That sounds really good. I am sure my suggestions are of limited value since you have already been there and can make wise decisions based upon your past experience. If you can get a reservation at Ma Gibbs Farm for a night too, it is a real treat. It is on the internet now. Wishing you a fantastic experience. No flash around the elephants!

I envy you this safari trek. I have been in many Tanzanian game parks--Mikumi, Lake Manyara, Ngorogoro Crater, Serengetti, and a couple of others whose names I do not remember. If you have not yet chartered a safari, I advise you to just fly into Arusha, rent a hotel to rest up, and walk around the square to hire your own Land Rover and driver--much cheaper and much less crowded, used to cost $100/day for driver and Land Rover. The tour groups crowd so many tourists into a Land Rover that you feel like a sardine canned in olive oil. If all those folks also have camera bags as large as the one you propose, it will be even more crowded. Drivers put you up close to the animals, so I found that a long lens was less necessary than a good prime. If I were going again, I would probably take the K-1 and 31mm ltd, 77mm ltd, and maybe a 200mm or 300mm lens. Good luck to you whatever you do, and happy hunting!
