I love that bird shot. So many bird photos are closeups as if shot for a catalog photo as an illustration, but this one provides a photo of the environment, bokehing to the back. Hope you will do some more along this line.

It is beginning to bother me as it points up too vividly my own inadequacies.

In the situation to which you refer, it is the Canadian geese which can, so to say, really make a difference!

OK, yes, I understand now. The 645 400mm f 5.6 gets high reviews from Pentaxers, and my experience has also been quite positive. I am quite interested in a considered opinion by any Pentaxer who may have used both these two lens and can offer an evaluative perspective.

Hi Walt: Sorry to be a nuisance. However, I want to be sure we are referring to the same two Pentax medium format 645 lenses. The two I am referring to are.
1. SMC Pentax-FA* 645 300mm f 4.0 ED (IF)
2. Not concerned with the Sigma lens.
3. SMC Pentax-FA 645 400mm f 5.6 ED (IF)
Are these two lenses the same ones you are referring to in your No, 1 and No. 3? or are you referring to K-mount lenses?
Thanks for clarifying this for me.

I have both the 300/4.0 and the 400/5.6 Pentax 645 telephoto lenses. The 300 is a star (*) version and widely hailed as a great lens. However, I have achieved about the same results with the 400/5.6 on the 645D and 645Z. I notice in the Pentax Forums lens reviews that the 400mm actually rates higher than the 300mm in sharpness (9.7 as compared to 9.0 for the 300mm). Actally, I have not used either lens extensively, mostly to capture the turkey, deer, and the occasional red fox in the fields across the street from my home, not a birder. I would be quite interested to read actual user reports and comparisons of these lenses. Another thing that surprises me is how inexpensive the lenses tend to be when sold as used, as compared with fairly high prices when sold as new.

Here are two non-avian telephoto shots with K-1 and Mamiya-Sekor 645 C 300mm f 5.6, not that there is anything wrong with bird shots.

Yes, I am guessing 2,500 feet. This Mamiya C medium format mirror lens seems a lot sharper than the other one I have, a Minolta, also 500mm f 8.0.

I do not have that lens, but I do have the Pentacon 500mm f 5.6 which I have never really used. It is a monster, much too heavy hand hold and also turn the focus ring, and it come with M42 mount so can only use it on Pentax K-mount cameras, not K-mount. It has a larger than standard mounting screw size so have not been able to fit it o any of my standard tripods, which anyway are too light weight for this monster. Has anyone ever made use of one of these lenses?

Deer in meadow, 50% crop.
NOTE: Using Pentax-FA 645 150-300mm f 5.6. EXIF shows 260mm setting, but I thought it was set at 300mm, sorry!

I saw one of those in Bombay, India, as well where the Parsis/Zorastrians place their dead to be consumed by vultures. There are problems now because the vultures almost disappeared from consuming cattle flesh containing some sort of deadly chemical, and are only now being slowly brought back after the outlawing of the cattle chemical.

Reminds me of driving some of the back roads of India where they have offal yards where people bring their dead animals. There are always flocks of several different kinds of vultures hard at work, not at all frightened of humans when they approach.
