My collection is no longer so meager as it was three years ago, but I know what you mean, for me it's probably the K-5 and the DA 40mm XS in the DSLR realm.

Back in my early years, when I only had a K1000 and a 28mm lens, I took some great pictures, making the best of what I had, and making what I had work in whatever situation I was in. I really knew that combination well, and even knew what it could do in low light conditions, etc. Having more lenses now, I don't feel I know too many of them well enough to shoot without chimping. At least teh SIC forces me to stick to one lens for a month, and that does help a lot.

The 50mm is nice when the subject is far enough away to take it all in, no distortion, good DOF.

Love it, I think I'm the only one in my family who looks forward to winter.

I wish I'd saved my last damaged frying pan to make my own.

I shouldn't do it, but I might have an FA 77mm by next week. It fits into a gap I've wanted to fill as I attempt more portraiture.

Yeah, that's it, justified purchase!

Considering the APS-C crop factor, I think this is sound advice. Using the 21mm and the 50mm, in 35mm Film eqivalents, you are using a 31mm, which was considered the top end of wide angle, to 75mm, which is above adequate in portraiture. Good 50mm lenses, especially if you'll accept manual focus, are very inexpensive on the used market. I'd save my money for the DA 70mm or FA77mm, both of which are fine portrait lenses on AS-C being above 105mm withte crop factor, and they give great results.

I'll add that if you don't own the Da 40mm XS, buy one and try it out, it's my jack-of all trades lens, my walk-around lens that does really well with informal portraits.

Great work, I will keep this in mind when we get rid of an old pan.
