Didn't want to start a flame here, just wanted to know if it had become defunct while I was away.

Just wondering if the gallery has died. No new photos added since since 2014?

Only three photos deemed worthy since Jan. 1st! Are we all really that bad or have people given up submitting?

Thanks Miguel and Racer. Appreciate the kind comments. I have to admit, with all the awful unkind comments the judges can come up with these objections to B&W images really floored me.

I could but I didn't bother to do any pp on the color version and I am really not up to doing any. I really question someone who judges photos that has no room for B&W in their life. Sad really.

Trust me Mike, it isn't. My pp work does need help but that will come with practice.

Sigh, another reject by the PEG. My only complaint though concerns two comments made by two different judges:

"Someday I'll understand why some people think B&W photos are preferable to color photos. B&W looses all feeling in the sky and landscape."

and (the caps were the reviewers not mine. Nothing like having someone yell at you while reviewing your work. To be fair, maybe he/she did not realize all caps signifies you are shouting.

"I WOULD HAVE LIKE TO SEE THE COLOR IN THIS. WHY B&W..."

Judges who can't see or understand B&W should not judge them. Poor old Ansel Adams is turning over in his grave.

It is a real shame about that spider Margriet. He deserves a place in the PEG. I have taken to saving the judges comments in a separate folder called "Giggles from the PEG." My favorite is one that has half the judges dissing the subject as being out of focus and the other half commenting on how tack sharp it was.

When you submit a photo to the PEG you don't put it in a category, the judges or someone other than you get to do that for you. One judge actually criticized me because he thought one of my images should have been in a different category. Go figure since I had nothing to do with it.

By the way, is there no recourse against the NatGeo judge? No one to voice our complaints to.

I have looked and looked at the dark feathers and I still can't see any purple. You weren't the only one to notice purple fringing but I swear I just don't see any. Maybe my monitor?

First let me say, whether I agree with them or not, I have learned a lot from many of the judges on the PEG. It takes a lot of time and knowledge to critique in an honest helpful manner.
Secondly, there seems to be a lack of consistency is the basics of a review. I was told the image was over-exposed and under-exposed by different reviewers. Which was it?
Lastly, reviewers should know at least the basic rules of submission (ie: size requirements) for each entry. They should not have to guess what lens was used; the EXIF is there and they should be able to see that information.

Submission to the PEG is a learning process; at least that is the way it was set up. I would hope it could go back to being that way again. I enjoy seeing what others think of an image I thought had merit and I learn a lot by finding out its flaws. It only takes one reviewer making unpleasant and rude unkind remarks to ruin the entire process for all.

I just got one accepted and I honestly don't know why after reading the comments. It was a close-up of an owl with the crowd reflected in its eye. Most of the judges hated the reflection (one said I should black it out). Another said "I question what is exceptional about this photo." Another assured me he had lots of pictures that he took just like it and it was a common shot of photographers; another assured me it wasn't PEG material, and one of judges said it didn't meet the minimum size but he (kindly) didn't dock me for it - by the way it did meet the requirements and the judge should have known at least that. Another judge questioned the lens I used (evidently they don't see the EXIF). The one that fried me was the comment that the reflections were man made. That is like accusing me of cheating. I guess the bottom line is that even though this one made it in I sure didn't come away feeling any better about it than if it had been denied. Somedays don't you just wonder why we put ourselves through this stuff. Dane.dawg, that image should have made it in and I can think of no reason it didn't.

Well, even with my poor eyesight I could tell they were rain streaks. Another "clue" - rain drops on the back of the bird. Looks like dane.dog got bit by Mr. Nasty. Join the club. The comment about not being a NatGeo photographer was completely unnecessary. I just don't understand the cruelty some of the judges seem to get off on.

I know what you mean about rude comments. I have received several and don't understand the thought process behind it. As you noted with Dr. Orloff's reviews, constructive criticism is the key if you are going to make a comment at all.
Lots of improvements have been made on the judging and it is getting better but being mean or rude should never be an option and I, for one, would like to see a venue to report such comments or at least be able to know who made them and find the reason behind them.

If I didn't choose the category, why would the judge even bring up the fact that he thought it was in the wrong category? Sometimes I think the judges need to be more careful of what they put in their critiques. Some of the comments I am getting are so off base I wonder where they are getting their information.

Does anyone know how pictures get classified in the PEG? One of my photos came back saying it should have been classified as a landscape instead of nature but, to my knowledge, we don't get an option to put entries into a specific category.

Actually, there was a real error message. I am familiar with the wording of the site after the upload. Not sure what was going on that day but it was the only time I had gotten a message like that after an upload so there must have been a glitch somewhere. Still doesn't make the comments to me go down any better. By the way, your comments are some of the most constructive out there. Keep up the good work.

Little miffed because I just got slammed for submitting a duplicate image to the exclusive gallery. When in actuality I received a submission error so I resubmitted it and received the same error message. I assumed the photo didn't go through and didn't try again. Really made me angry because most of the reviewers commented on how I was not to do that. One said "DO NOT post twice. One will be reviewed, one discarded because of being a duplicate. Votes could be diluted." Another reviewer said " Duplicated. Not sure which is the first so both fail." Just wanted to let them know that I am not an idiot it was not intentional.

Just had another photo rejected but this time it didn't bother me nearly so much. The feedback in most cases was excellent and I agree with margriet and Tamia. The improvements are fantastic.

Thanks for the response Adam. It wasn't what I was expecting from the PEG since I thought feedback was going to be provided. (Note the 5th bullet under why it (the PEG) will be better than the PPG.) Maybe it would be better to place the photos in the critique section before posting to the PEG and gathering the feedback needed before daring to submit. I'm not trying to sound snippy although this is beginning to come across that way. I really just wanted to get some feedback on the photos.
Thanks again Adam for the time and trouble you take with the forum. You do a great job.

I am confused re: the rejection process. I have submitted five photos and four have been rejected. There was one comment on the first photo that I could at least relate to the photo I submitted but two of the photos had no feedback at all and the fourth had feedback about cropping 40% off the photo which didn't seem to relate to the photo I submitted. I really was hoping for feed back since rejections at PPG come with nothing that would help me to improve. This series seems to me to indicate one person is making the determination on the quality of the submission or else no one is bothering to offer comments on improvement. Am I missing something here?
Please don't get me wrong, I think the whole idea of this type of gallery is wonderful but I had hoped to learn something from it and not just receive a four word comment on two of four rejected pictures.
Thanks for any insight you can offer, Susan
