The males are kinda territorial so you almost never see 2 males except for a brief moment when one is being chased off….

I was working in the garage when I spotted some tiny birds on my power line. A trip into the house for the 400 and my binoculars , a quick camera set up and then observing the birds with the binoculars reveled just what I had here. I could not tell what they were by eye, just too far away. I sat and waited having prefocused the 400 on the bird bath area and after about 10 minutes they came in. Had a ruby crowned kinglet show up today when working in the garage but was not ready and no images…I am making a mess in the garage right now, lots of dust ( upgrading my log splitter with side racks, travel stop, hour meter and filter guard, all metal cut and welded from scrap I had here, ) so no cameras out there . I’ll be ready tomorrow as all parts are painted and mounted….and I cleaned the garage with my blower…no dust/ metal shavings allowed in/ on the 400!

Thanks. The 400 [ mostly shot at 680mm with the AF 1.7 ] is still going strong with the K-3 III.

The 1.7 af adaptor [ not sure if TC is the correct way to describe this ] almost never leaves the 400 these days, I also have the 1.4XL and the 2.0XL but seldom use them. The manual focus on the 400, while smooth and precise, takes forever by hand! Close up or far away, birds move way to much to be cranking the focus back and forth to get many shots. The limited auto focus of this adaptor is a wonder to behold if one has never used it. My SMC 50 f1.7 is almost a true autofocus lens with this, my other usage for the 1.7. And yes when doing close-ups with the tripod queen 400 birds do know I am there, and they do keep an eye on me... This test of the K-3III was important for me, as Canon and Nikon AF 400 lenses are very sharp but no better than what I can get now...

Thank you. While I saw no bird fatalities here, nearby many birds did not make it. Bluebirds and white wing doves suffered during the freeze. I did have 3 axis deer die on my property, a species introduced in Texas for big game ranches but have since escaped and rapidly multiplied. The ever present vultures clean up rather quickly...

Now that the snow and ice and 6 degree weather are gone and the water and electricity are back on, more backyard images with the DFA 150-450. My wood burning stove kept the place warm, I cooked in the garage with my Coleman stove and used my 250 gal rainwater storage for most things. Plus I have 2 generators but only ran one as I did not have enough gas!!! The Texas big freeze storm was bad for many but I was mostly prepared. I did go thru 40 lbs of bird seed in 2 days, never have I seen so many birds in the yard. I had to go out and toss seed on the ground as the 3 bird feeders were like a free for all, way too many hungry birds and not enough perches. The seed on the ground spread them out and minimized the chaos...When the sun finally came out, 2 immature bald eagle's flew over, heading south for warmer weather...
