With the K-r I use Portrait mode plus set Sharpness to Fine Sharpness. I use RAW on the DSLRs and like colors from PDCU. If you try to fine tune settings like this in your camera Pentax software starts with them. Also its auto WB is much better! I still use my CCD-cameras, esp.K200 D, but the main driver is now the focusing screen that I have in it for manual lenses, not the colors.

I tested my M40 against DA 40 XS and would say that if you stop it down one or two clicks more it is more or less on the same level with its modern equivalent sharpness-wise. Some claim it is better for infinity photos also.

If I remember it was soft overall, but the most significant problem was/is built quality. It was looking solid for plastic-fantastic, but literally disintegrated after I bumped my monopod on something in the deep snow while having this lens on the camera.

I had it once. IIRC had to be stopped down around f 10 for good results.

For me RawTherapee is very good when I want detailed output, but it is really not easy to get good colors with it sometimes. For my K200D I use Velvia slide film simulation and/or some Vibrance tool mainly boosting patel tones. Anyway I lately use more and more one of the later DCU versions as colors are really fine there and if you change sharpness settings to "fine sharpness" it gives quite detailed output (for me and my K200D the difference is more like new demosaicing algorithm, not sharpening).
