New zoom 70-200 F4

Indeed so. I am really glad I got the 60-250 as I realise a 70-200 just wouldn't do for what I do... Landscapes.

Lately the 250mm end came in handy when incorporating birds into the landscape, 200mm would have been short.

With the 60mm end I needed to walk back a bit for some shots, 70mm would have been too long.

I'm so glad not to be waiting for or wanting lenses.

Not me, the 60 and 250 ends I use extensively and nor do I bother lugging along my F* 300 f4.5 any longer, I only got a DA* 60-250 a short fime ago and I have to say now that finally I don't want any more gear. Now I just concentrate on the photography and is nice to not want anything else...

Paradise syndrome

I'll not be looking for the new 70-200 f4 as I bought a used DA* 60-250 f4 instead for cheap with a 1 year warranty.

First day out I used 60mm and 250mm extensively so I wouldn't want to lose the extra reach. It is also a stellar lens and I managed the AF fine with fast moving dogs jumping into surf

As a landscape lens it is superb, great colours and renders, and as sharp as you'd want...

I compared 2 supermoon shots: First with K-30 with F*300 f4.5 @f8 against K-70 with DA* 60-250 f4 @f8 @250mm. Now the F*300 f4.5 is a stellar lens but I was able to crop further with the K-70 24MP and DA* 60-250 to achieve slightly better details of the moon.

Much of this comes down to 24MP vs 16MP but this saves me lugging around my F*300 f4.5 along with say a new 70-200mm f4.

Now I know why the DA* 60-250 f4 gets such a high rating!

Agree, Mistrals typing fingers aren't connected to his brain.

As if the historical intellectual property in the history of Pentax hasn't trickled down into "Ricoh Imaging".

Maybe this website should be changed to ricohimagingforums.com but people will think we are photocopying enthusiasts.

Is it a full moon or something?

That is the definition of a rebadge to me. A bit like Vauxhall cars in the UK are Opel in Europe... Same car with a few changes, steering wheel on other side, kilometers on the speedo and a few reg changes.

Pentax lenses are designed and built by Pentax.

It is a big plus over Tamron coatings, HD coating is brilliant, apparently according to the transmission curves Aerobright is even better. Pentax were always at the forefront making the best lens coatings.

No mention of Aerobright for the 60-250 on the Ricoh website. How would you even know it is used in certain lenses? Could be a con 😀, at least with the HD coat it is easy to see it works and the colours are so natural/saturated etc.

Where does this info come from? Not according to PF database anyhow... Both the DA* 55 and 60-250 have SMC/SP coatings?

I always thought Aerobright was a newer technology than DA* 55 and 60-250 anyway.

Let's get away from all that. I could only find a couple of good photos of the 60-250 on K1, only lots of vignette tests. So if someone knows a secret album of glorious photos let me know.

Ah right you mean the baffle mod. I'd love to see good photos with a K1 60-250, I'll need to have a look

TBH I am delighted it works as a FF lens if I ever get one that is, still to this day don't feel the need despite being a landscape photographer.

Snowing/sleeting/thunder lightning outside maybe that is why

No more rabbits, the info exists elsewhere.

What do you mean by improved corners on a K1? I thought DA lens corrections did not work on FF.

I have the 60-250 but not K1.

It always amazes me how many photographers do not understand the crop factor...

A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens on both FF and APSC. On APSC the sensor can only see 2/3 of the FF image.

It is like zooming in 'cropping' in Lightroom. The 50mm lens does not behave like a 75mm lens, it behaves as a 50mm lens and we zoom in 1.5x to give 'only a FF equivalent field of view of 75mm' .

The 60-250 on APS-C 'only' has an equivalent Field Of View of 90-375mm on FF. It is not the same as using a 90-375mm on FF. A 90-375mm lens would obviously have more reach.

One advantage of APSC, say a 24MP is that is has smaller pixel density (this is a disadvantage too regarding dynamic range) so the FF equivalent would need to be 24MP x 2.25 = 54MP FF to achieve the same advantage regarding the crop sensor.

Not scepticism, if it was the Tamron it would have been on sale ages ago I.e. a rebadge.

You know it is a Pentax lens coming as you need to wait years for it nowadays.

Yeah... I don't know why they mix it up. I like HD, know it works well and have 2x HD lenses, I know SP is for the front for protection but Aerobright I and II sounds like toothpaste

The coatings on the DA* 60-250 f4 seem very good for SMC, it is very flare resistant, I know SMC improved over the years.

There are different glass types too which is a thread in itself.

I didn't say it had, I said the new 70-200 will have HD coatings.

Does the DA* 60-250 have Aerobright? I doubt it, you mean the DFA* 70-200 f2.8 has. 60-250 has SMC and SP

The new (when?) 70-200 f4 will have different and more natural colour than the DA* 60-250 f4 due to the HD coatings but better IQ I doubt it unless you consider more natural colour part of IQ which I suppose it can be (I am a big HD coat fan). BUT...

It is designed as a FF lens so possibly better vignetting performance, no need for modification, I assume a ring motor will be used, not DC and AF will be quicker.

Rounded blades will give the new lens creamier bokeh as opposed to the swirling type bokeh of the DA*.

I don't expect the new lens to be better than the DA* 60-250 as it is not a star lens, saying that I think the HD DA 20-40 f2.8-f4 Limited is a better lens than the DA* 16-50 f2.8. It depends upon on what level of lens they are designing, for example, as good IQ as the DFA* 70-200 f2.8 but an f4 version for which they can't designate a star to.

Yes, no ordinary black paint but derived from our nearest black hole at the centre of our galaxy. All light gets absorbed, never to reappear and good value at £11.99

Heavier gear also needs a heavier tripod too, all this starts compounding rather quickly and then the idea of just using your phone on long hikes starts to enter the mind.

Whilst collecting my DA* 60-250 f4 I jokingly told the guy in the shop it was for street photography and he looked like this

I thought of the new 70-200 f4 too but you could be waiting a long long time yet for it. I use a K-70, DA15, DA 20-40 Limited and the 60-250... That is my hiking kit and the 250mm end is handy as it saves me carrying my F*300 f4.5

It took me years to settle on the above, I used to carry 7 primes etc. A complete pain in the bum

I know what you mean but the DFA 50 f1.4 has had at least one reported ring motor failure. Your DFA 70-200 f2.8 is twice the weight, costs 5x £359 and has a shorter range than what I wanted. Amazing IQ though I know but I'm well happy too.

Most of the 60-250s seemed to be OK, while the DA 50-135, DA 55 seemed to be more notorious but I know the risk anyhow and can manual focus, it's all about the IQ 😃

My mistake, about the same weight, the Pentax lens is smaller though when compacted and uses 67mm filters. This is important to me as a hiking landscape photographer.

As I said above though the Pentax has a much larger range and the reason I have it and not the Tamron... As well as all weather use, silent AF etc.

No, the DA* 60-250 f4 is around 300g lighter than the Tamron 70-200 f2.8

60-250 is a much greater range than 70-200, 17% more at the short range and 25% more at the long range... Which is a big difference. The Pentax is a very sharp lens which makes beautiful images, you know it is a * lens when you see the images... The bokeh, 3D pop and colour is top notch for f4

I don't have a K1 but I did recently buy a bargain priced DA* 60-250 f4 for my new K-70. A new one no but for £359 with 1 year warranty... 😃

It definitely deserves the * badge... For the recent supermoon I got slightly better resolution from the DA* 60-250 with K-70 than my F*300 f4.5 with K-30... Which showed me how good it was in this test.

I couldn't wait and got a used DA* 60-250 f4 at a bargain price instead for APS-C. I'm very impressed with it, the IQ is superb.
