Cream and quality seems to be forgotten - I LOVE MY 60-250mm - sad it's not a pancake and does not directly fit my pocket. Damned Ricoh/Pentax.

Hey, that's sounds more convincing!
Maybe you will keep it.....

---------- Post added 05-13-17 at 12:21 AM ----------

Study this:
SMC Pentax-DA* 60-250mm F4 ED [IF] SDM Serial Numbers - Pentax Serial Number Database - PentaxForums.com

After 2012-2013 they did put a new SDM-gear in that 60-250mm - some of the the old ones "clogged" and crashed.
Study your serial number. After that the problems.disappeared. Search the forum and You will find more on this issue - not only the 60-250mm one - also many other SDM-lenses..
Later repaired or manufactured SDM-lenses do not suffer.from this disease!.

There are some of it here in the Pentax forum - search!
If after 2013 - no problems!

Pity that is. Not all but some Pentax SDM-lenses suffered.

My serial number is on the right side.:)
So if You buy one, new or old, - ask for the serial number..after studying the link above...

Well...You have done "SLR'ing since 70'sand You can strongly judge the lens from what You see in the pentaprism.....wow...

You have far better perception than I have - I bought my first Spotmatic 1973 - I can tell You my lenses under f/4 are not just getting duller in the finder they also vignettes.

BTW - I'm also picky!!!

If You go out and test it - I'm convinced that You like others here are pleased with the result.

Otherwise You have got 12 filters or something else on the lens.:D

Come on!
You are just baffled - a part of the mod that is.

....You might be picky?

Most zooms do vignette more or less.

Have a look here at Nikons comparable f4 zoom 70-200 f/4 VR (FF) (Price about the same or more)
Scroll down to paragraf 11.
(Edit: Something went wrong with the link here under - refresh page and and it will work. End G.P.)
https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-70-200mm-f4g-vr/

Draw Your own conclusions!

Looking around the net for comparable zooms - I would easily rate our modded lens-vignetting as "very controlled" (that sentence taken from another lens-test where vignetting was worse than on my modded *60-250mm)
Far better than the Nikon one above!

Some informative link here about vignetting:
Understanding Lens Vignetting

If You want a better result - buy yourself a f/2..8 version and stop it down to f/4.
Compare to the Pentax D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 vignetting - as You can see on the blue rectangles it still has some vignetting left stopped down to f/4
HD Pentax-D FA* 70-200mm F2.8 ED DC AW Review - Vignetting | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Some vignetting is "normal", more or less, on most lenses depending how You use them.
Zoom-lenses more prone as they often contains more groups of lenses.

The ultimate solution is only to buy FF-lenses and put them on a crop-sensor cameras only or buy to MF-lenses to be used on FF only..

(BTW I hate the word "FF" - it makes MF sounds much smaller - when I was young we called FF "24x36mm" - that is descriptive and exact.. What is a real FULL FORMAT FF camera? - Is it in the Hubble-space telescope)

For sure - my modded Pentax *60-250mm is an excellent 24x36-lens!
Also easy to carry and saved me $$$'s for other photo-stuff.

Holy Moses!
That looks really brute! At least unaesthetic!
Did You do that in the sauna with Koskenkorva vodka in the other hand?

That's for sure NOT Swedish quality!

To others here - dismantle the baffle-set the way described before and put the lens in another room while carefully anti-baffeling the star(*)-lens.

I call that "Pentax Star-Wars".

I have modded another lens for a participant here. However sending 60-250mm lenses around the world is NOT CHEAP - and to that comes package and handling and insurances and uncertain however post works as it should.

However - this is just a thought:
1/I take my unmodded tube without the SDM-part to a workshop and ask them for the cost of let's say to mod 15 pieces. If OK to a reasonable price THEN
2/ try to buy 15 pieces unmodded baffel-kits from my camera workshop mentioned above
3/ Loosen the baffel-tubes give them to the presumed workshop and have them fixed.
4/ Then fetch them, inspect, paint and glue the parts - ready to delivery after postage and handling..
5/ Customer (you that is) get it and change the parts having your original as a spare.

I or preferably someone else in with this idea?
Let's put it this way - I want to enjoy summer and all else so there is resistance in me....
You know my motorhome - fly-fishing - photographing - hiking - enjoy my kids and grandchildren etc etc.:)
Sweden and Norway has short summers - like northern Canada - and North it will go!!

BTW:
(PH vs JIS - PH has a tiny longer tip - sand the PH tip just a bit and it fits just as good as a JIS - I did learn that long ago when I worried about that by an old fine-mechanican in my veteran-car-club.
Just make sure You have total grip and fit using the screw-driver - You feel when you have total fit yourself. Anyway - it's only the upper part that effectively torque the screw - so you want to "bottom it" in the X )

I bought it from my often used firm:
Kameraservice Kungsör AB
Box 135
736 23 Kungsör
+46 (0)227 12740

info@kameraservice.se
Or their site Startsida - Kamera service i Kungsör AB
For me they have always been great. Best camera workshop in Sweden - inkl Hasselblad.

They also told me the trick how to get the tube-assembly out the easy way without springs all over the place - and also showed interest in the mod telling me that in their opinion it would not have any negative effects on FF.

I did see that someone had problems with focusing above - do not forget to glue back the tube to the baffel-part - otherwise that one its lose and moves by itself. Three tiny dots glue with a small glue-gun, that's it.

BTW - What a lens on the K1!!!
Also often use it with Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 and sometimes with Pentax 1.7x AF adapter - both FF, when needed - mostly without.
I'm not technically ashamed of the quality of my large prints made by that very lens.

A clear barging - let me say carefully, at least, "a recommended star lens" for a Pentaxian!

Want some help with contacts with the camera workshop - PM me! But I can not promise anything - I'm taking great care of having good relation with them.

Fenwoodian, looking at Your photo of Your lens - why did You remove the contact next to the screw situated at about just before "nine a clock" - looking straight into end of the star 60-250.

There should be five plus one - You have modded and have four plus one.

Some extra features of Your own?

I do not need your baffles - in this thread we remove them/it.
That is what we wanted.

Having a hard time, sir?

"A tube is a tube - a baffle is a baffle"
A baffle is sitting in about 90 degrees from the main light-path.
The tube is parallel to the light-path.

That's it!

Again:
Some other thing - You could at least have thanked the OP of this thread for his observation and thoughts on your other sites on the Internet showing your success - for what You gained. Like a gentleman You know!

I might be wrong - You did this long before we did?

For sure no!

I distinguish between the tube itself and the baffle attached to it.

What we do/did here was removing just the baffle (light-hinder/curtain).

For You it seems that they are all the same.

What You say now seems to be some sort of after-construction.
- Hey you even now says that you put the baffle back. (Look at your own statements above!)

Pity I cannot see it!

You and I are on different planets and uses different frequency - thank goodness!

That is - what YOU see - and think!
However removing that tube you will see a lot of mechanics - that is now also unprotected - that has chrome and brass surfaces right in the light path.

I have never before seen or used lenses in that state and for sure would not use such a lens.

I believe and is convinced that the tube with its inside black flocking has an optical purpose, a rule for the engineers. Also to protect your star lens.
It's a part in the construction to make it a star lens.

I'm interested how You can be so certain - just doing some simple test?

OK - you are an optimist AND it's your own lens.
I don't care in that way - it's Your standards.

Hoping You take more care describing and testing all those 50mm lenses.

Hi - that Tamron TC - tested it on Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 at f8 (where it shall be at least - new thread here should it be...?) on K-1, Hallo I now also have a 14-28mm zoom. for the K1
To be noticed is that the Pentax 1.4x HD TC did worse - as I did expect (made for APS-C that is) .

My old lenses are going more and more interesting.

But best and most used is the FA 50mm/1.7.

What A2 (16.5"x23.4") prints on the Epson 3880!!!
Hallelujah!!

Now having star 300/4 , star 60-250 , 14-28 Sigma/Tamron (OK - not the star but...) FA 50/1.7, K28/3.5, FA 100 macro 2.8, plastic fantastic DA 35/2.4 etc etc

I'm home in FF again - smoother than I expected!

I have the Tamron-F 1.4x Pz-AF here and rate it as very god - it's up there.
I'm sure that TC has better coverage than the Pentax 1.4HD as the last is just for APS-C.

Glad I didn't sell it - one is now and then on the 60-250 and the other one is on the brother of the 60-250 - that is the DA*300.

However my serious telephotographing, birding etc is solely with the K3 - that is more "bang" as you often crop - sometimes heavily.
More pixels that is where you mostly want them!

The tiny SDM-contact has TWO black screws to be removed!
The glue is soft and easily removed - I think it's there just for the worker to make a fast mounting of that unit. Some nice cuts with an oldays razor blade will do it!
You "dremmel" just the tube with the baffle - for the moment put away that SDM-contact holder!
I used those cylindrical "red" grinders put on a rubber shaft. Be prepared to use up to perhaps five of those grinding-cylinders as the alloy as described by Pentax ads - is pretty hard.

Or go to a local machinery-shop and have it fixed - carefully describing what You want to have done.
Probably they will mount the tube in a rotating lathe ("svarv" - that is in Swedish - not sure if "lathe" is the right word in English).

Cost for that glued kit was just 220 Swedish Crowns (SKr).

Google and you will find out how much that is!

OK! First You must remove the little SDM-contact forked on the very end of the lens. That little black thing with two golden contacts.
Lift it right up carefully.

Now the lens up-side-down and a finger in that optics - just take out the tube withe SDM-contact holder - no force at all needed.

...now been using it for more than 10 days just for the very interest in the mod done by me.

Let's say I'm very satisfied.

I have absolutely no interest of buying the new D-FA* 70-200mm - that F2.8 is superseded new K-1 ISO-sensitivities and by it's weight at 3.86 lb (1755 g) (sic!) (that is 600g more!!)
Let's not talk of the cost changing those lenses - I'm sure You have noticed that.

Should be fun to test them both together - I'm sure the old star optic 60-250mm is up there!

Why not go to a mechanical local shop, describing the whole problem and what You want to be done with that very baffle on your tube.
Also tell them to be careful with the inner black flocking and absolutely not shortening it..

Could not cost that much. Perhaps while you are waiting?

That lens is worth it!

I went to other zoom-tests on the net testing their vignetting - this * zoom 60-250mm actually stands out.

I think this baffle was put there for APS-C in last minute to fit just that format.
A technician at Kamera-Service AB (authorized Pentax service/repair company in Sweden) agreed before I made the mod and also told me the method of removing it and fix it.
I'll call him and confirm that he was right - perhaps he will report "up".

It was the thread starter making to contact the company - being a bit anxious about it from the beginning. (Actually You don't do this things to a *-optic from Pentax!)

Sometimes all goes the right way.

Now I can forget all this and go on using it!

Next step - a small diesel camper for two. To start with - Norway-Sweden all the way upp to North-Cape and a trip back through Russia and Finland.
Next year - coast of Mediterranean. And so on ...and so on...I'm now a senior, newly pensioner.

I totally agree!

...60mm (FF) for example is exactly what you need to give life to an otherwise rather flat landscape - that extra touch.

That whole lens - I loved it from the beginning - and now even more - now thinking of asking Pentax sending me an extra star to put on it.:)

That 300/4 * star with TC - is in the same class.

However going easy - 35mm on the camera and a 100mm macro in the pocket. That's it for 85% of all my photographing.
You know - like the Leica-snobs in the sixties with their 35mm plus the 90 mm in the pocket.

Still works - now with Pentax FF.
