I've participated in this thread, so I'm not without blame, but I can't believe that we've gone for 91 pages arguing and speculating about something that we'll have actual information on in the next week and a half. I'm willing to just wait and see what they say.

Both the KP and the K1 would be fine upgrades for me and the K3 line would give me a nice refresh. They'll make their announcements and then we'll know. I'm not leaving Pentax for Sony, Canon, or Nikon because I enjoy Pentax. But, I do think that I'll purchase a body in the next year and within 2 weeks I'll have more information to plan around.

You guys are all awesome. Be happy. If you really can't be happy with Pentax, move to another brand. It's okay.

I totally agree with you, except that I have no use for GPS. I love seeing astrophotography photos that you guys post, but I live in the city and we're lucky to see the moon or a planet most of the year. I'd not want my camera to be bigger, heavier, more expensive, or later to market while they worked that out.

Just make me a really good camera...ANOTHER really good camera.

Are you in center point, SEL, or Auto mode?

These results would frustrate me too.

Whatever they announce and release, they'll get snide remarks from PentaxForums. I think I said on page 1, we're as hostile as we are loyal. Over 80 pages, it's clear that we don't all want the same thing, which means they'll hear from the group that they didn't accommodate. I guess it really comes down to sales.

So, it's possible, by that logic that neither the KP nor the K3 will get a new version, but something that is not quite either will make it's debut. It's possible. Maybe this is how they get the flagship ASP-C and FF cameras to have the same layouts and controls. That wouldn't be a bad move.

I'm still betting that we're going to know soon. I'm willing to wait.

I like the KP body. I don't like it enough to own one, but if I were a K1 guy, maybe I would like it enough to own it as my travel backup.

I think having it and the K3xxx in the market together is a good thing. The problem is the K3xxx is behind the KP in image quality and they need to at least catch it up. Pentax said right after releasing the KP that it wasn't meant to be the ASP-C flagship. But, they haven't kept their flagship current.

I don't usually participate in these discussions and it's been interesting, though I suspect that I will not do it again next time. This one just caught me at a time when I'm thinking about a new body. But, 50 pages or so ago I made this point, I'll make it one more time and then stop adding to this until Pentax actually tells us something.

There is no reason (except one) for them not to have brought forward the gains that they made with the KP into the K3 line. They should have taken the sensor and the processor and updated the K3 with it as a K3iii.

EXCEPT, if they are ready to release a replacement for that camera, which they actually said they were going to do this year. So, I believe that announcement is coming. I don't know, I could be wrong, but that's what I believe. If they weren't close to that release, they would have updated their flagship ASP-C offering with gains they have already made on that format to keep it current in the market while they labored away on the next big thing.

I'm anxious to see the new camera, what it includes and how it's priced. Then I'll have all of the information that I need to decide when and to what to replace my K5 with.

Sorry to keep coming back to this, but if I we're in the market for a new MILC (FF or crop) and my existing lenses we're not going to work with that system, why would I care if it was Pentax vs Sony, Nikon, Canon, Olympus or whatever?

Ergo, how does Pentax releasing one keep me in the brand?

This is exactly right, Mark. There is nothing wrong about the Pentax K3. It's a fine camera, but it's not the best Pentax ASP-C dSLR available at the moment. The KP made significant strides on it, but in a different form factor with different priorities.

Honestly, I have wanted to like the KP, but haven't been able to quite get there. I'm starting to understand it and it's making me think seriously about them again. That quality of crop dSLR in that form factor at that price? Quite compelling, actually. I want it to feel like my K5 in my hands, but maybe that's just something to get used to. I want it to have a top LCD, but maybe I should consider how I would take in that information without one instead of rejecting it because it's not what I'm use to...or maybe I should stick to the line that I'm currently in.

But, that's where the rub comes in. My K5 is still a great camera, but probably needs a month a Precision at a cost equivalent to a used K3. A new camera in that form factor is a significant step below the KP in ways that matter to me, so I can't feel good about doing that.

The K1 is also really compelling for it's size and price compared to the market and most of my lenses are compatible with it. It's tempting, but I don't really "need" to go Full Frame. Might do it anyway if the current choices are still the choices when it's time to act.

The hole in the lineup right now is an updated K7/K5/K3-line model. When it comes out, I might take a look and say "it's close enough in price and size to the K1 that I should just go that way" or it might send me back toward the KP.

It's hard to convince myself of a body purchase until that model gets announced. My gut tells met that it's coming, probably at Photokina but this year either way, but my gut isn't always truthful.

As we've debated this ad neuseam, I've come to think that the KP is the successor to the K-01. A travel companion to either the K3 or more likely the K1. Smaller, lighter, but k-mount, familiar controls and an OVF. Use any lens that you would use on your upmarket Pentax dSLR, but give a bit on certain spec to get a smaller, lighter carry. This thought makes me like and understand it more. They tried mirrorless crop ASP-C and it didn't really work, this does.

K1 is doing great. We have some excellent enthusiast models. Let's update the K3 and get on with our happy lives!

I recently heard a rumor that Pentax plans to release what they have been developing and not change directions based on this debate. Take it with a grain of salt, my source may be unreliable. :-)

I started a thread like this last year and I got kind of panned for it. What features would you be willing to live without in exchange for form factor, image quality, battery life?

Pentax doesn't have to do it just because the others are.

What is the value of a Pentax mirrorless, if it is not K-Mount, which is certainly would not be? Better to buy Sony if you have to start over with new lenses.

I don't know. The only example I have is Pentax in the context of the KP launch. There are better industry insiders than me, maybe one of them will know.

I've handled a few KPs, but I haven't rented or owned one. Based on Pentax Forums, it seems to be clearly a better ASP-C than the K3ii at taking pictures, but not at everything.

They made some sacrifices to get to the form factor they did and those trade-offs are going to be more important to some folks than others. The key is that Pentax said at the time that it wasn't the flagship, which justifies them stripping some of those things down. If they wanted it to be the flagship at this point, they'd have to first eat crow and second starting putting some of those things back in, which would change the form factor and fundamentally make it the K3 successor rather than a KP mark ii. I don't see that happening.

That said, I think the KP is a really cool camera and I hope they continue to develop it. If not, it's going to become a cult classic when it gets discontinued. If they have some simple enhancements ready to go with it, I'm all for releasing them as they did with the K1ii. I also feel strongly that since they have a better ASP-C camera from an image standpoint, why the hell wouldn't they move those upgrades into a flagship chassis? I'd buy one.

The only reason not to do that is because they have a completely new flagship on it's way to market.

I have to say that reading about the new Nikon FF mirrorless and reading today about Canon's upcoming equivalent, I have ZERO interest in a Pentax offering if it means a new lens mount. The continuity with all K-Mount lenses past, present, and future is one of the strongest ties that binds me to Pentax.

I've also not been won over by EVFs, but I'm open to advances that change my mind in the future. It's definitely not something I "need" and may not be something I want. If I wanted a full frame mirrorless camera with an EVF and was going to start over with lenses, I think I'd go straight to Sony, even if Pentax put something new out.

I think the K1 line, the K7/K5/K3 line, the KP, and the K30/K50 mid-offerings sew up the brand for me as far as DSLRs go. I don't use the GR, Theta, and existing MILC offerings, but they seem to be successful with their users.

---------- Post added 08-31-18 at 11:19 AM ----------

I'm sort of due for a new body right now. I've ruled out the KP after handling it a few times because while I think it's an amazing offering, it doesn't quite check my boxes.

I've mostly ruled out a K3/K3ii because the KP takes better pictures. I'm watching to see if there is a new flagship offering and what might be compelling about it and will weigh that against going to the K1.

If they released a KPii that took it that extra mile that it missed with me, I'd be open to it.

Some people prefer Sony and I get that. They make a good product and it is tempting. Happy that the people who want them are able to buy them.

I would not be happy with the cost or options on lenses and I can't warm up to a EVF.

They're making a good product and it appeals to a good market, but it's Pentax for me.

Well, I get that they're going to get skewered, because we do that. In fact they can count on it. We're stubbornly committed to this brand, despite market share and all indicators (I am), but as a group, we are hostile to them as we are loyal.

But, I'm not so sure. I'm frustrated that right now, we all know that they can built a better ASP-C camera, because they've done it already. But, they haven't packaged it and made it available in the flagship form factor. Why would I buy a K3, knowing that the KP is a better camera? But, the KP is not the flagship, they've said that too. It was built to be a retro-travel camera and they crushed it, but if you like the K7/K5/K3 form factor, and frame rate and want to stick with it, you have to settle at this point for inferior image quality.

So, scenarios:

1) The ship is sinking and we're all going down. - I doubt it, I've been hearing that for years and they've put out some great stuff while that was being said. But, even in this scenario, take a K3 body and release it with the KP sensor, AF, Stabilization bits and end on a high note. It wouldn't cost them much to do so and even if they announced their demise, it would probably only increase sales of both it and the remaining KP and K1 stock.

2) They've got some game-changer scheduled, but it's not ready...same as above, they can already build a better K3, just release it and then change the game when they're ready.

3) R&D has dried up, the company is still going, but they're focused on lenses and trying to get their **** together and they know that we hate them, though we're fiercely loyal...quick, give them a K3 with the upgrades from the KP while we're working on a plan.

4) They have something better and it's imminent...so, we wait.

Honestly, the KP was an interesting move. ASP-C flagship guts in a scaled down body and feature set. If they have no R&D money and no ambition (on account o' being doomed and all) they could produce a K3iii with the improvements introduced, tested, and firmwared in the KP. No brainer, unless their plans are bigger than that.

An ASP-C flagship release is in the wind for this year, so why is this so tough to believe? Granted, this is a botched marketing release at best, but that doesn't mean that there is nothing there. I'm sort of in need right now, so I'd like to believe.
