I was referring to the 645 system, so this remains speculation. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that way.

For the 645 system, is there any evidence that they are not exactly doing this? If so, I must have missed it.
Since we are already in speculation mode, how about this: they wanted to streamline their manufacturing and get the new electronic diaphragm going. Now that apparently both is accomplished, they are ready to update the whole system with a new body and a new line of lenses on the same level as the D FA* 50mm (and with appropriate pricing of course).

No doubt about that. I suppose the computers used to design 1980s lenses were much bigger and took a lot more time.

Computer-aided optical design was already available in the consumer market in the 1970s. E.g., Vivitar's first Series 1 lenses were advertised as computer designed.
