DA*16-50 redesign?

Yes, and Pentax quickly released the K5ll to address shortcomings in the K5...... I suspect that changes in a big zoom lens compared to a shutter fix are much more costly and time consuming. If they fixed the DA*16-50 I'd love to have had Ricoh admit that there were problems with their DA*16-50 and that all was well. If they had done that they would have sold more of the lenses and given us users a lot more confidence in the company. :(

Hello in beautiful Helsinki...:)

That $999 price is exactly why I'm looking so seriously. And as far as the 16mm not being so good, I don't expect many zoom lenses to be razor sharp at either end. At some point I may just buy the Pentax 15mm for more serious wide angle shots as people say good things about it. I'll have to wait and see how heavy the DA*16-50 is but I'm sure that it will be lighter than the Sigma 300mm 2.8 that I'm dreaming about for birding... :)

Humm.... well, again, I've never seen any of these lenses and can only go on what I read. I've followed a number of your posts and have come to respect your positions and advice. Do you see a better option than the DA16 to 50? I really thing that the actual 24 to 75 focal length is ideal for me as my main walk around lens. I looked hard at the Sigma 24-70 but that leaves me needing to buy a wide angle lens and what I need to do is begin saving for a serious birding lens... :)

Ah, well the packaging and paperwork could be from a large stock of original inventory. That's pretty common I suspect.

I suspect anything sold now is all new stuff.

Well.... having no way to see, handle or hear the lenses in action I can only make decisions based on reviews and the many comments on the Forum that while the screw drives are dependable they are slow and noisy. Both are somewhat subjective and there is no actual comparative data between the two that I've seen. In any event I don't want noisy.

Do Canon and Nikon still use the screw drive system? (I actually don't know)

That's good to know. I have no idea how many of these lenses have been sold and that there were "hundreds sold" on Black Friday gives me some confidence.

I tried to call Chuck at B&H earlier today but couldn't get a hold of him. I wanted to chat "off line" about the lens and not put B&H in an awkward position. So I finally just posted the question to him on the forum. Wonder if there's a way to pull the request?? Anyway, I'm going to take a chance and order the lens in the morning and then try and get an idea when the K3's will be available.

Thanks Adam...

It has been mentioned in a couple places on the forum that after many early focus failures with the early releases of the DA* 16-50 lens that Pentax "made some improvements" to or somehow corrected the failure prone components. Does anyone have any actual evidence of this actually happening? I'd really like to know as I am very interested in the lens but am reluctant to spend $1,000 for something that is likely to fail.

Thanks, Bob
