The galls on the tree should each have a grub...that's what causes the galls. I think grub is most visible in first post pic. It's definitely there. You can see the segments/rings on the body at both ends. The midsection is quite fat and grubby whereas mealworm types tend to be more lean. A good arborist could probably tell us the type/species of the critter just based on the tree species.

Look closely near the shrike's bill...a grub looking critter...so this is either rotting vegetable matter with grubs or possibly a chunk of native bee hive with larvae? I'm guessing the former.

Head of the grub is in the bill and abdomen ends across on the opposite side of the chunk...
