Backpack quick-disconnect buckles on top of the fanny pack and crushes to stow in the big outside center pocket. So when you use the backpack that frees up that additional pocket because the backpack isn't stowed there. It buckles into the spots where the shoulder strap snaps in, so you remove the shoulder strap and use the straps on the backpack whenever the backpack is affixed.

Note that the ebay sale of this backpack for a bit less than mine does not appear to include the backpack--a rather serious omission! So yes, the backpack is fully removable, but should be stowed in it's pocket on the fanny pack.

This is a pro grade and pro sized fanny pack that includes a stowable backpack and rain cover. Lowepro made smaller versions, this is the biggest with the most padding (note thick fanny foam not included on smaller models). Made from heavy grade cordura/canvas.
Designed to hold pro-sized camera body and big 80-200 f.2.8 zoom as well as 3-4 additional lenses and flash. Fits 300mm f4 in lieu of big zoom. Nylon webbing, buckles, belts, straps and stitching are heavy to handle the weight. Lid opens from the inside to facilitate use while wearing--perfect when the ground is too sloppy or when it's unsafe to place a bag on the ground.
Kidney shape makes it hard to give dimensions...on long dimension will fit items to 14". Width up to 8". Depth up to 8" allows most lenses and all modern Pentax flash units to stow upright.
Includes supplemental shoulder strap to assist with heavy loads. Also has heavy duty tripod stow straps underneath. Backpack stows in outer center pocket as does the rain cover.
Has 3 additional external pockets, (plus the extra pocket that becomes available if you have the backpack mounted). Large pocket inside under the lid.
This is a substantial piece of equipment capable of serious photo excursions.
