What is Pentax doing?

The market research is readily available. Weddings are the largest market for pro photographers.

I have said for the past four years, make a Pentax camera and lenses that satisfies the weddings market, and they will satisfy almost everyone.

Sorry if I’m ‘bleating’, but a shepherd that doesn’t listen to his sheep is gonna lose his flock.

Your photos are still life, largely, clackers.

I was employed to shoot about 10 bike races. All pre-focused. I lost both jobs

Well, that’s just nasty.

And I’m a troll?

---------- Post added 02-21-18 at 04:29 PM ----------

Correct me if my recollection is wrong, but I think kenspo specifically mentioned ‘professionals beyond landscape and studio’.

So, to my thinking, that entails wildlife, sports, weddings, out life. All areas that require great AF.

Thank you. A voice of reason in this madness

Thanks. I only use back button AF. Ever.

But it is kind of you to give some advice 😀

Kenspo himself (who seems to be accepted here as the oracle, along with Asahiman) recently stated that Pentax were seeking to appeal more to the professional market.

Now if you are a loyal follower of kenspo, what do you think that might entail?

More lenses? Of course.
Anything else?

I tried to upload some samples, but file sizes are too big or something

Frankly I am tired of this “change brands” cop-out.

My point is, and has always been...Pentax have deficiencies that are limiting their sales.

So you’re happy? Wonderful. Others are happy? That’s wonderful too. I love Pentax as well.

But it MUST catch up with what serious photographers want (AF first on the list), or the doom of Pentax will be real.

I don’t want that to happen. I’m sure none of you do either.

If you love someone, but they are hurting themselves, do you not say something to them?

OK, so maybe my issue is the use of AF-C?

I’m happy to accept advice, but how do you track and capture sharp images with a moving subject?

Even a bride walking slowly will have moved out of focus by the time the camera locks and is ready to fire

---------- Post added 02-20-18 at 03:51 PM ----------

Of course you can pre-focus, i’m Not that stupid. But you will miss golden moments like that

---------- Post added 02-20-18 at 03:55 PM ----------

I agree totally. The sigma is a dog for accurate focus. I usually used the DA * 16-50, which was better.

But for a very dark chapel I had no choice. F1.4 lense was needed

At iso 800, f2? Maybe I need some improvement in my own skills.

I sorta thought that putting the focus poit in the subject and using the AF button would do the trick...

OK so talk of cup holders and heaters etc gives me the message loud and clear.

I apologise profusely for suggesting that Pentax could improve.

I shall return to my hole.

It is using a K-3, in a chapel, shooting the bride walking down the aisle. And the shooting the couple leaving. AF-C. 30% keepers at best.

Singma 35mm f1.4

---------- Post added 02-20-18 at 03:09 PM ----------

For landscape the K-3 is a gem. I love it in every respect.

For tricker situations it’s poor

---------- Post added 02-20-18 at 03:14 PM ----------

Actually even in a well lit chapel the AF-C was woeful. I missed a lot of special moments as the bride made her entrance

My point is, in part, not about my own desires. It’s about Pentax attracting more customers. And that can only be good for those of us who love the cameras they make. Am I wrong?

The simple truth is that people looking to buy a new camera watch and read reviews. I have not read or watched one review that recommends a Pentax over its competitors.

But, to answer your specific question, if I was still shooting weddings I would gladly snap up a new Pentax with improved AF.

I wonder how many wedding shooters have passed on a K-1 because of AF etc

Haha...no they haven’t. Well researched.

But maybe they’re working on it. 12 months with no new body is a long time, even for Pentax.

But perhaps you are all correct, there just isn’t the revenue these days.

Pentax is...doome...

No I can’t bring myself to say it

I would like Pentax to be on a (semi) level playing field with others.

Why? Because it will attract more customers. More customers = more revenue. More revenue = more R & D. More R & D = better cameras for us Pentaxians.

Simple

Firstly, there is no brand bashing happening on my behalf. I am merely wondering what they are doing.

I have only ever used Pentax. I love the cameras they make, but deficiencies in AF are frustrating. I used Pentax for weddings for some time, and it was (on occasion) embarrassing.

Sure, it’s easy to say “just change brands”, but that’s not viable for someone with shallow pockets. I do wish people would stop saying that. Changing brands is a huge cost.

Sony, Fuji, and Olympus have all greatly improved their AF systems. Why can’t Pentax? Surely Ricoh has at least the same resources as Fuji or Olympus?

Ok, so firstly, I have avoided posting here for some time because I received complaints about being a troll. I was a tad peeved about that, I just speak the truth as I see it. I’m sorry if the truth offends some folk.

Anyway, I find myself wondering where the good ship Pentax is heading. With only one new body in 2017, and a handful of lense announcements (read ANNOUNCEMENTS...not releases) I began wondering what on earth was going on behind closed doors...

Asahi Man predicted, in 2016, that 2017 was to be the year of new lenses. Not exactly, was it? 3 new announcements? Only 2 of which are FF.

And so I thought to myself “well they must be busy doing some R & D to bring them up to speed in AF, touch-screens, AF joystick, and other goodies”. Keep pace with the D500 and D850...

But, with recent leaks about K-1 mkii, it would seem that all that silence has not amounted to very much. At least not yet.

They really took the industry by storm with 3 excellent cameras (k-3, 645z, and k-1), and now the seem to be letting that momentum slip away.

Thoughts?
