The Sony has IBIS, but it is driven by a chip on the lens. They haven't implemented manual entry of focal length yet. I am waiting for that feature. While Pentax cameras have purportedly the best dynamic range performance and features geared for using legacy lenses, I haven't gotten a Pentax because they are absolutely massive when compared to the Sony SLTs (I use the A55), and there's no FF option yet, which makes upgrade options limited. Planning to get a Sony A7R when the price drops. :D

I use a Sony A55, it works great with my other Taks. I have the S-M-C Tak 50mm f1.4, S-M-C Tak 35mm f2, Super Tak 28mm f3.5 and the Tak 200mm f3.5. Maybe my copy of the 200mm is a bad one. ):

Someone mentioned the Takumar 200mm f3.5 a while back. I have had mixed results with this lens, because it is a pain to focus. This was shot at f8, and I do not know why it looks so bleargh. Any thoughts?

That is definitely true about the Takumars. By modern standards, they aren't fantastic; I know that my 50mm f1.4 S-M-C is waaay softer and fringier than many of the modern equivalents now, but then there must be another factor that contributes to their popularity even till now - that is the aesthetic that you talk about. I find the Taks more contrasty than other lenses, and they can maintain a high level of contrast even in brightly lit places or when shooting into the sun. My 28mm f3.5 preserves shadows very well even when other lenses would experience image-destroying haze. Other more subjective traits like "three-dimensionality" are also often mentioned, but I have yet to figure out what it is that makes Taks so awesome.

I have no idea. He was an old gaucho who was playing traditional songs, didn't speak a word of English. I am also not familiar with guitars so I have no idea, sorry!

Any tips on helping nail the focus? It is even harder on cropped bodies like mine, as it becomes a 300mm f3.5. Of the 5 I posted. Only the last 2 IMO were spot-on. :/

I recently got the chance to cover a dance performance from the wings, which was the first major time my Takumar 200mm f3.5 saw great use. These were mostly shot at ISO 800, 1/200 - 1/320, and f3.5 - 5.6 on my Sony A55. I am pleasantly surprised with its optical quality, and even with the focusing difficulties presented by the ridiculously long focus throw and tiny DoF, I found the lens pretty forgiving on focusing errors. Another source of focusing error would be the drop in contrast when this lens flares, which it does A LOT. This makes it hard to tell when things are sharp, and creates a hazy image. I found a good way to remove this in Lightroom would be to reduce the contrast slider, then usea heavy S curve along with clarity to reduce its effect. A few of these shots are spot-on, but some are slightly off. With proper micro-contrast processing and good levels and curves adjustments, most are passable. Another thing to note, stage lights can be very intensely colored, making it impossible to obtain a satisfactory white balance. Try playing with cross processing and complementary colors to neutralize any strong color casts. Cheers!

Anyone else use their Takumars on the Sony SLTs? I use mine on my Alpha 55, and the EVF is a great convenience because you can magnify and check focus, which is vital when I shoot on my S-M-C Tak 50mm f1.4 wide open.

I recently picked up a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 35mm f2. So far, it seems decent but suffers more than the 50mm f/1.4 in terms of corner sharpness. Should I use a hood with it? And if so, what hood and how do I mount it? Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the accessory system for Taks.
This was a cropped shot, but the resolving power on the lens is great at the center.

Yes, this was done handheld. I have the later version of the lens, not the earliest one. But, I do plan on getting one of those Super Taks for the vintage value and to compare IQ. Any thoughts?

I recently picked this up. I am blown away by its performance and am now a screwmount junkie. Strangely, I think I'm more comfortable with manual focus than autofocus now.
