I realized this was an issue. I must admit I am having difficulty in discerning when this is acceptable for an animal portrait. I believe that I had an "interesting" backdrop with the crate. I believe it added texture and its color contrasted with the cat's color subtly enough. I was going for the sharp "near eye" technique with the aperture setting. I have a limited lens collection and the 50mm 1.4 is the only prime I have. Dropping down to their level is great advice and I must admit that most of the shots I got of this cat were from slightly above. I really appreciate all of your pointers and I will keep trying.

Thank you! Thankfully, this is my sister's cat and did not warm up to me:). I was able to catch her zeroing in on something and I was trying to capture a look of concentration.
I agree with you. I appreciate the advice and I like your adjustment.
