I'm surprised by the retro attitudes. I mean... "Maybe someday in the distant future EVFs will become good enough for casual point-and-shooters who would be scared of a real DSLR anyhow."
In some ways EVFs are better than an optical viewfinder already. They can overlay all kinds of useful info: camera settings, histogram, exposure highlights, levels, grids. They can show focus peaking. They can show you -- at least roughly -- what your exposure looks like at the current settings. You can see color and art filters in live view. It does a better job of showing you what kind of image your camera is about to capture, and that is the name of the game. That's why the SLR was invented, to give us a more accurate view of what the camera will capture, and EVFs can do it even better.
DSLRs are not "doomed to extinction" any more than fountain pens or vinyl LP records are doomed to extinction. They'll be around for a long time, but I can easily imagine a time, not too far away, when they may not be the mainstream choice anymore.
