Check out Online Depth of Field Calculator
I use the calculator all the time. Really great information. ---------- Post added 10-09-14 at 05:58 PM ---------- Really great work on the last 2 pages!
Just curious who uses a hood with the raynox and who doesn't? I started using a 49mm screw on hood I can't say I see a huge difference which surprised me.

It is basically a very high quality magnifying glass. You clip it on to the front of your lens and allows you to get closer, more magnified shots. Here is raynox's homepage. The 250 is higher magnification than the 150. Really a pretty good cheap way to get into macro. It does the same as cheap "close up filters" but MUCH better quality and multiple elements that "correct" distortion and CA

Well I'd certainly be happy with that shot I think it's pretty good.
IMO a external flash with a diffuser makes a huge difference. The short flash duration really freezes everything and lets you stop down a bit more for DOF. The the Yongnuo 560 and a $10 diffuser work very well is probably the best bang for the buck if cost is a concern. A flash makes life SO much easier doing macro TOTALLY worth the $60
A couple things you can do to help with daylight shots. I like to use a monopod as it can be moved easy and one twist I can raise or lower it. Gives enough support to frame and steady the shot. If you use a monopod turn SR off.
Looking at the exif, I'd say 1/1000 is much faster than you need. I'd say slow shutter down to 1/200 ISO400 and then one stop down from the aperture you where using(say from F8 to F11 or F11 to F16) would give better DOF and finer detail with the lower ISO. I have a k30 same sensor and everything and it does pretty good at ISO800 also, but when I look at 100% I can see loss of detail on my shots I don't see at 400 and when I shoot insects I want to see that detail
I hope this helps

Nice mark! I haven't tried stacking yet.
The colors seems pretty muted, especially in the eyes, but maybe that's due to the ether free state of the subject.
I wonder if a little spray of water would help plump him up 30 minutes pre shoot.
You can put a live fly in the freezer, then revive it with salt. Not sure how ethical, but I saw a guy do it.
This is a cross post from show me your insects, but it was taken with a raynox 250 on my tammy 90 macro. |

Hey Mark! It doesn't look too bad, looks like motion blur.
I find using a flash really helps stop motion blur, and then you get get better DOF with smaller Aperture(bigger number) I almost always shoot F16 1/125s ISO 200 while doing marco.
Thanks for posting, Macro is very demanding and I think your shots are better then my first attempts. Keep them coming!
I like to shoot is RAW instead of JPEG, it is a bigger file and more work, but it lets you make many more corrections.

I just started trying a Raynox 250, and I was very shocked there was NO CA to correct....NONE!
This was with 90 Tammy and Raynox 250. Cross posted from arachnids |
