I actually returned the camera after getting back from the holiday, my dealer was gracious enough to give me a store credit as I know them very well. I tested it with another 15-30 and did not find it to be really any different. I love the K1, its an excellent camera and an extension of the wonderful 645z.

As my second kit I now have a 5DmkIV and a selection of Canon lenses and I love it. The overall image quality from the camera is very comparable to the K1 for the applications that I now use it for, which is travel, handheld live view with tracking, long lens work and some landscape, along with quite a bit of astro. I was recently in Cambodia and one night I was in a Tuk Tuk and some locals came alongisde on their motorbike, I held the 5D out the side in live view with a 35mm f/2 IS lens attached and it tracked perfectly. I got some great shots and the K1 would have possibly struggled a lot with that. The AF system (both through the viewfinder and in live view) on the 5DmkIV is another level above the K1. I also much prefer a through-the-lens IS system that you can see working, its much better for framing etc and nets the same result in internal camera IS.

I am still using my 645z for landscape exclusively.

If I did not have the 645 system, I may have a different kit which would possibly include the K1.

You buy a system for what you need it for, so when its great for somebody else if may not be the case for you, but thats fine too.

That's what I am doing and it's working fine.

I am also seeing a little shot to shot inconsistency with sharpness once correctly focused so will also be testing the SR on and off as well.

Can anybody offer advice on what focus distance I should look to test for Fine Focus Adjustment on a 15mm lens? 5m, 10m, infinity?

So a bunch of travel photos that aren't really sharp taken with a $5k camera combo is acceptable to you, cool. Not me sorry.

Yes. And I am starting to wonder if it's lens dependent. Am I asking too much of a 15mm lens to repeatedly hit correct focus at infinity? The details are so small. I don't have another lens to test, only my 645 kit.

The myth of set and forget focus with ultra wides does not apply here, I don't know how it ever did, especially not with these new high res sensors. Even a slightly miss focused shot at f5.6 at 20m will look not ultimately sharp as it could.

Just reading responses from everybody and maybe I have not been quite clear enough in my description of the problem. The issue isn't that the focus is landing on another object in the frame, it's that it is locking onto my intended target but is not fully in focus, it's either front or back focused.
It's nothing to do with AF point selection, but AF point accuracy and consistency of arriving at the same point every time i.e. Infinity

Sorry for any confusion.

Ok fellows,

I went back to the drawing board and went over everything with a fine tooth comb.

I was using single point Centre AF in selectable mode (movable point). I have now switched to single point spot AF (Centre).

This may or may not be better, I can't tell at this point. The selectable point uses 1 of 33 points, just like spot mode, but in spot mode the AF point square on the viewfinder gets smaller.

I have for the time being unpacked my 645z so things are ok for now as I brought it along for the trip.

I need to do some further testing before I get back to you all. I am seeing some shot to shot inconsistencies in sharpness, but am wondering if this is to do with the sensor stabilizer. Is it effective at higher shutter speeds of say 1/1000 on a 15mm lens, or should it be turned off for that type of use? I don't know.

Thanks for the ideas! I will keep this thread going over the course of my trip and report back. I so very much want to like the K1.

Scott

I have the 645z on board so no worries if the K1 is a problem :)

Using the 15-30 lens.

I am at the Mont St Michele Abbey on the west coast of France now, tried to focus on a large stone tower at infinity and every time it lands somewhere different. I have tested it in manual focus and found the perfect point of sharpness, but then move over to AF and its clearly not going to the same spot, it will do it 1 in 5 maybe.

Also latest firmware 1.10

Well I purchased the K1 as a smaller walk around camera to my 645z.

I am currently on a trip in France using the K1 and 15-30 lens.

I can say that it is the most frustrating and angering experience ever with a camera. The K1 autofocus is in my view absolutely a joke for a 2016 camera.

It can not focus in the same spot either at infinity or 10m time after time, just ruining shots. I am having to AF and shoot multiple times to get a good result, even at 15mm.

The only safe bet has been to enter live view, use live view AF and then exit live view and shoot. The results then are satisfactory.

Even with AF fine tune, it is still inconsistent and when attempting infinity focus it will land in a different spot every time. I can focus using live view, then using the mirror and the results are so far away from each other, sometimes spot on, sometimes way off. It's like a lucky dip.

This is most likely going to cause a stir but I am so over the K1. My initial decision was between a Sony A7 series or the K1 and I feel I have made a huge mistake.

Before anybody decides to question my knowledge, I have been using a 645d and 646z with great success for years, along with a Leica M9 (manual focus) and Sony A6000, previously other Canon bodies as well with none of the issues I am seeing here, so I welcome only positive ideas on how to look for a fix for this, other than selling the camera and moving on.

Cheers, Scott
