K-1 and Nikkor lenses

After examining the Nikkor Pre-AI 50mm 1.4 that I sent to David at www.leitax.com
He concluded, "there is no practical way to use the pre-AI lens on a Pentax camera, [with a change of mounts] because the original mount is actually operating the iris with [its] spring and lever mechanism."
Just thought I would pass this info along, in case anyone was interested.

I was not "surprised" the adapter did not work. I just wanted to see if it would. David at Leitax might not be interested in making a "Pre-AI" Nikkor adapter, but you never know. These Nikkor lenses were the mainstay of photo journalism from 1959-1977. So, some of us who are as old as the ancient Pre-Ai designs still like the look of these lenses. Sort of like a painter likes certain brushes. The great thing about the Leitax mounts is that it allows a person to use a wide range of lenses, with just a couple of camera bodies. I sort of like the look of Hasselblad and Pentacon Six lenses on my 645D as well, so I just wanted to see if I could get that Nikkor look from the '60's going on a K1000 & K-1. Non of this has anything to do with rationality.

I sent David at Leitax.com the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Pre-AI today. Travel time for the lens will probably be about 10 days, so we may not hear much more on this for a couple of weeks. I have only been shooting with the K1000, but plan to get a K-1 in the near future.

I have emailed them a lot, and they are always responsive. When I looked in to the lens, once I got the lens mount off, I could see that the newer Nikkor and Ziess ZF lenses have a much different set up. It would require an completely differently machined mount, and even then, the aperture might not work. Just wanted to let others on the Pentax forum know.

I was thinking about sending Leitax.com the lens, to see if they might be interested in making a Pre-AI Nikkor mount for K.

The leitax adapters have worked great for converting a Zeiss 50mm ZF 1.4, and and a couple of AI lenses (28mm, and an 85mm 1.8) However, today I tried to use the Leitax mount to convert a pre-AI 50mm 1.4. It would not work. It seems that the way the camera mount adapters work on the Pre-AI and the AI and AI-S are different. All of my pre-AI have slotted screws while the AI and AI-S have a Japan Standared "phillips". That should have been a tip off. Once I took it apart and I couldn't figure out how to rehook the spring, the lens probably went from a $60 to about $.50 in value. From now on, I will stick with AI-S Nikkors for the the Leitax adapters.

Thanks for the information. I did convert a Nikkor AI 85mm f/1.8 with a Leitax adapter. It was a pretty easy process, so I thik I will convert the rest of my Nikkkor lenses. (Some AI, some Pre-AI and some AI-S.

Anyone care to elaborate on Nikkor Pre-AI mount works on Pentax K. I have some Nikkor Pre-AI lenses and was thinking of changing out the mounting flange to K type mount. Maybe this is not necesary?
