I imagine that was correct for professional bodies at the time, but the more consumer-oriented bodies such as the ME or MESuper were often packaged as a kit.
I bought an MESuper, M50/1.4 and AF200T Flash, cases and straps and a few other bits as a packaged kit in the early 80's. Each item was attractively nestled into a cardboard cutout, packaged in a single silver, red and black kit box. IIRC the kit cost just under $500, but my memory fades after 30+ years.
[EDIT:] Based on the Reply below I imagine my total price was more along the lines of $249 plus tax.
