How many APSC shooters will truly upgrade to K1

@Nicholas06 @biz-engineer

You're sort of missing the point. Making generalizations about Value for Money is always a mistake. As Nicholas said about me, every decision is individual. Unless there is some kind of pathological disorder (actual destructive buying addiction), every purchase is correct and optimal value for the individual buyer at the moment in time.

You all don't know better than the individual buyer.

I have the money. I have the muscle. Neither cash nor weight is a limiting factor ~ because I want to. As a hobby, high-end SLR photography has always been too expensive for mass consumers. Then again, middle America types spend $75,000 on a pickup, bass boat and trailer, so maybe it isn't that expensive after all.

It's just a choice. People who can only afford an APSc camera and one lens actually can't afford it. For almost every kit buyer, the camera is a lower priority than something else they want, so they get an inexpensive, serviceable camera.

I sold a lot of expensive fishing gear and a lot of hi-tech camping / hiking gear and shotguns and a collection of Hardy Perfect reels and casting reels and I'm finished paying for college. I drive inexpensive cars and live in a modest home and skip Disney World; but I buy camera stuff. It's just a choice.

I carried K-1, the FA Limiteds, A20/2.8, FA24~90, AF540 and spare batteries in a Domke F3 all over historic Kansas City Friday - Sunday. I never wished it was lighter. Ever.

I am merely mildly irritated that certain commenters continue to suggest 95% of K-1 purchasers don't need it, will never use it's capabilities and (it seems to be inferred) don't really deserve to have it based on their skill level and intended use for it.

My rebuttal suggests there are more justifications than perhaps these posters have taken into consideration. :)

@reh321 - yes, I believe you understand, where @Nicholas 06 and @biz-engineer don't (or they're off in some ooda loop arguing about something objective, which misses the point).

I bought a K-1. I bought it retail, over the counter with local sales tax. I'm extremely happy I did because I've now had it more than a month. I bought it even though I already have a K-3, which I will never fully utilize, because I like using old full frame lenses. I like using them better on my K-1 than I like using them on my K-3 or on one of my several dozen film cameras. It brings my joy to use these things, and more joy to use them in the manner they were designed to be used.

That's the only necessary justification. It brings me joy. Rational argument is pointless and meaningless because joy isn't rational. Joy is evocative.

RICOH, I believe, knows this.

K10D for the CCD sensor
K-01 for the 16Mp sensor (too bad it's only 12-bit)
K-3 for FoV with long lenses
K-1 for . . . Well. I've been waiting a long time for FF.

Before advanced CAD design tools it took about ten years to earn back the cost of designing a lens (software may have shortened that) so some of the DA primes might take longer before a refresh - of the Limiteds and * lenses, I think only the SMC 40 is over ten, and the 21 and 70 are around ten - the *16-50 and *50-135 were introduced in 2007.

When this subject was hashed over a couple weeks ago the majority supposition is they used the D800 sensor and claim to have altered some surface-mount peripherals and contacts to obtain their preferred signal from the sensor. We'll never know for sure until Roger Cicala or someone else tears down a body.

At $1,799, that's good enough for me.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when they agreed on the planned production number.

As my sig says, it has ALL my Must-Have-List features. :D

But I have a use case. K lenses (and I'll get one of the new zooms).

Funny thing. The K-1'has gotten me out 'practicing' with my K-3 every day for two weeks now. ;) *

* I'm not going to buy it if I'm not using what I already have. So I'm going to buy it in Augest (6 months of shooting first).
