I think we unfairly associate China with Walmart cheap, which isn't really true any more. Volvo engineers, for instance, have been delighted with new Chinese owners Geely, who have given them money, support, freedom and money, unlike desperate, penny-pinching Ford. According to Car and Driver the new XC90 is a revelatory offering. I'm looking but my wife is aghast. Even though we have a Japanese/American Honda, a Japanese/American Subaru and a German/British (BMW) MINI, she can't imagine owning a Chinese/Swedish Volvo.
I pointed out that her original baby hauler was a Swedish/Canadian Volvo 240 Wagon. Didn't help.

Venture Capital demands 45% annualized ROI for three years. They know their investment will either triple, break even or Zero. They sell the B/E at year three and add to the winner to get the 300%++ return. The Zero's are actually rare.
Private Equity has lower objectives and longer Horizons, but the want more day-to-day control, and they often alter the company and products dramatically (ref. what SPARX Asset Management and Hoya did to Pentax).
You can't fault a scorpion for stinging you - that's what it does. Hassy either made a poor (prior) choice of investment partner or took the only money they could get.

VW bought Porsche as a PacMan defense to keep Porsche from buying VW*.
* Using leveraged derivatives, which threatened to make the entire enterprise insolvent. The craven transformation of DeutscheBank from quintessential conservative German lender to cynical global prop trader and deal broker enabled Porsche; hedge funds got caught short VW and bid up to cover; the deal - and VW's stock price - collapsed in the crash: everyone was ruined.
One supposes the emissions test spoof was a resultant desperation move.
