* So do they, since they’ve shut up except for the specious Coma and LoCa arguments.

I always wonder what motivates people who join, make a few posts, then the hijack a thread and start to stir these things up. What do they get by diverting a discussion, telling us we’re mis-informed, benighted, wrong, chose the wrong tech and theirs is better?

OP, start a new thread at least.

Open websites like DPR where posters seem to relish the outrage and count their affirmations (Likes) are one thing. But what motivates someone to come into a ‘closed’ discussion community like this one - by closed I mean a single-Brand Forum - and openly question the members’ choices? What’s the point? What does the OP get out of it? Money? Points? Some sort of perverse dominance psychology? Bullies’ thrill? Who do they think is going to High Five them? - (Yeah, Baby! Slammed that Nerd! What a Loser!!) - Seriously? Yeah, that’s going to happen.

I just don’t get it.

I think it’s great that we can buy all these tiers of Pentax 50mm lenses. Some day we’ll have something like that for the major fl’s and zooms.

AFA removing the baffle on the DA*60-250, depends how many thousands are in warehouse inventory. Do you expect them to unbox the existing stock, re-work them, rebox and relabel them and then sell them at the existing price? Do you expect them to firesale the existing stock to make a newer version available now? Or do you think maybe Pentax will deal with updating the 60-250 when the existing stock is sold, whenever that should happen to be?

At some point in the Development Story on the DFA*50/1.4 the product manager describes developing lenses today that are good enough to resolve future higher resolution sensors. It reads as if Pentax lens designers have a pretty good read on what is
Coming in sensor evolution. Perhaps the Development Team believes the DA*60-250, while a good enough FF lens today, won’t stand up well on future sensors.

A short zoom would be very nice to have, for sure. I would bet we’ll see a lot of primes - some combination of 20, 24, 28, 35, *85, and maybe 105 or 135, in a mix of of fast D FA* and smaller, slower D FA Limited standards; and a couple variable aperture or f/4 zooms of D FA28~105 or DA20~40 Limited quality before we see another FF * zoom or replacement for the Tamron-based lenses. I’d bet on new DA*16-50 and *50-135 to complement the *11-18 (and an entirely new platform for an APSc flagship body). I think they might just keep running SMC batches of The Three Princesses until people stop buying them. It costs no development money to do that.

Don’t forget Pentax has said they are designing lenses - especially ‘*’ lenses - for the future, to resolve the next generation of sensors and the ones following that. The production life of a good lens is a decade at least and they expect these new lens designs to be competitive for their entire lives.

If the FA Limiteds are the Three Princesses and the three DA Limiteds are the Three Princes, then the 8-element Takumar 50/1.4 is Emperor and the A*85/1.4 is Honored Grandfather.

I understand, but it does matter. Pentax is trying to establish its chops as a premier optics company. Do we know what percentage of the content must be actually made in Japan to earn the MIJ label?

Given the HD label I’d say its more than a possibility.

I don’t understand why, on the D FA 50 thread, the 11-18 thread and this thread, regular Forum posters doubt Pentax actually designed or built or even can build these * lenses.

Geez - really - Pentax is trying to build a reputation as a premier optics company. What’s up with you guys?

That doesn’t preclude the possibility that Pentax grinds, polishes and coats the blanks and forwards them to Tamron for final assembly. The lens says HD - Pentax built custom evaporators to apply HD coatings. A short Tamron production run using the HD coated Pentax blanks, no stabilization, and the cost of the premier coating just might raise the Pentax version cost.

I distinctly remember the Production Manager announcing that an ‘event’ had occurred in the lens production space, followed some days later by discussion that it was determined mass production could continue at a slower pace. This subsequent Press Release announces the actual reset release date.

Could be I’ve dreamt all of this, but I don’t think so.

I don’t have a link at hand. It was part of the announcement of the delayed release date. There was considerable discussion on the 50/1.4 thread and to me the subject of a machine failure, that they stated it happened, and waiting to release the lens until they’ve built sufficient ‘release’ inventory is accepted here. I don’t think such is controversial nor unique to me. My only speculation is the age of the machine(s).

Is that a material distinction?

Since they have chosen to run the machines at a pace they trust to be accurate - which they‘ve said - I consider that a testament to their adherence to a ‘highest standard’ target for the lens. I refer to commercial volume production, not final lens quality.

I don’t dispute that I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. Since I’ve not had a plant tour I used qualified statements. You can interpret that as you will, but this is nothing new, and I have background agreement.

Actual and inferred, current and historical, starting with Pentax’ own statement regarding the cause of the delay on the 50/1.4. They themselves said they had a machine failure and can’t make their machine run at production volume with satisfactory precision.

The very first thing RIcoh did, years ago, was buy new evaporators ($1,000,000 per machine) so they could introduce the HD coating on the DA Limiteds. Hoya stripped Pentax assets - all the good stuff - and left a shell of the former company.

You should know I rail against the PID meme, but there‘s no denying Pentax is tiny and requires significant capital investment to enable volume growth. .

FWIW, use of ‘suspect’ denotes this is my careful, informed opinion, not inside information. Nothing I wrote is controversial.

I suspect the QC at production volume cause is - their machines are elderly. They aren’t up to modern standards of precision as designed, and are worn to the point that they don’t operate with precision at production speed*. I suspect Ricoh will need to allocate some capital to Equipment before Pentax is able to produce commercial quantities of multiple *-quality lenses simultaneously.

* I suspect this is the problem behind the delay of the *50/1.4.

Frankly, the reason I haven’t changed is the disutility of turning over the lenses, not the cameras. It very well could be Ricoh is waiting for durable global economic recovery and firming of the dSLR market or proof the younger generation and technology have abandoned the mirrorbox before they fully commit.

Or Pentax is a hobby.

Either way I’ll be dead before it is resolved and in the meantime I’ll use and enjoy what I have without second guesses and stats-envy.

Yes and no. I know there's more in the pipeline. Ricoh does have a Plan. They're working on building the Pentax brand long-term, and you will (likely, eventually) be Happy.

Exactly what and exactly when I don't know because the people I talk to can't/won't say.

They really are a small company and they really can't work on more than one or two things at a time. If it is something big they have to work on it for a long time.

You know how it works.
If I know something, I can't say. If I say something, I can't know.

There have been indications from others for months about this on the Forum. My point here is (see post above listing camera and lens releases in last 2 1/2 years), Pentax is consistently releasing new products, some of them better than they've done in years, and there are still people here who complain they aren't doing anything.

In the 11-28 thread a credible poster essentially dismissed the lens as not real until he can hold it because? "Pentax has a history of not releasing lenses for a year after they are announced".

Ykes! That's just negative.
