The four eastbound lanes of the Poplar Street Bridge which carries I-64, I-44 and I-55 traffic over the Mississippi River, will be raised 1” and then pushed nine feet south. A new lane will be added in the opening between the halves of the bridge. The bridge section weighs 20,000,000 pounds. The Slide will be complete by Monday morning.
Planning to alleviate congestion around the historic St. Louis river crossing began in the early 1990’s. After reconstructing the 19th C. Eads Bridge, resurfacing and improving the approaches to the MLK and McKinley Bridges, abandonment of vehicle decks on other rail bridges and constructing a new bridge north of downtown (removing I-70 traffic from the PSB), this will extend the service life of the 1967 Poplar Street Bridge 25-30 years. Demolishing and building a new Chain of Rocks Bridge north of the City will commence this summer and complete the 40-year project. St. Louis Post=Dispatch article.
