46 min Interview with Ricoh's Mr. Baus (in German) from Photokina 2018

I originally wrote Ricoh did some experimenting a few years ago with features (like the LED’s) they ended up using in later cameras. Even DPR complimented the IQ, and they generally liked the camera (even if they panned the LED’s and had trouble with the 4-Way Controller).

Until the KP I travelled with my silver K-S1 and pancakes that I bought here for $75. Nice little camera.

K-1 changed everything, ;)

See my post above. They were supposed to be for hand held selfies. Seriously. I don’t think it had a flippable monitor, so I don’t know how selfies are supposed to work. But they learned about LED’s.

The designers were supposedly the hippest of hip young designers.

But it’s all ancient history now. Ricoh is designing great cameras and lenses. Let’s talk about the future.

Alas, Pentax buyers are old men who care about things like image quality, and how the camera feels in their hands, not little green lights. Pentax DID use what they learned about LED’s though, which was my original point. The used lots from the K-01 IBIS and probably more than we know from Q.

The above was the marketing response after having been caught* in the embarrassing design flaw. The LED’s were a flashy feature, intended to appeal to young phone users, to entice them to try an SLR. They could have been placed anywhere else on the camera body to achieve their supposed function, but the designers**chose the handgrip.

* I have personal communication from a member of the first group to see the finished production prototype K-S1. The design team running the focus meeting was reportedly stunned to silence by this person’s observation that the LED’s were covered when actually holding the camera. They reportedly hadn’t thought of it.
** As I recall, much of the Camera design was outsourced to the Japanese office of a California industrial design company. The design brief was a camera designed to appeal to first-time dSLR buyers. As I recall, RIcoh Imaging AMERICAS had a strong hand in the design brief and selection of the designers.

I note Pentax cameras are now designed in-house.

To draw attention, Pentax sometimes experiments with a gimmicky feature on an otherwise competent camera, thus giving Pentax critics a perfect hook to dismiss the product. The LED’s were a learning experiment (see K-1 external lighting) but putting them in the hand grip where they are covered when holding the camera was a hilarious oversight by the California design team. Similar observations can be made about K-01 (and Nikon Df). OTOH the KP handgrips are actually clever and useful - but they get no credit for them.

They only things retailers in America care about are profit per cubic foot and product turn. Unless they’re like my dealer, who carries a small stock of the major current Pentax products in the back room - for dopes like me - and one rank of shelves in the showroom. He just likes Pentax. Has since he opened his first store in1970.

Besides, I don’t think the member is in America.

It isn’t just “the AF”. To justify a competitive Action AF algorithm, aside from coding the ‘optimized for sports/action’ algorithm, they’d need camera with a new PDAF AF sensor, 12fps shutter, 20Mp sensor, faster jpeg engine, higher capacity bus, and UHS-III. The camera is the key. They’ll likely never release such a camera, so the investment in the specific sports/action coding would be wasted. If the rest of the camera can’t use the improvement it isn’t worth doing the work.

Besides, they don’t have enough lenses to use the capability if they built the camera.

I think action shooters here are in agreement that z-axis is not a Pentax AF strength, but everything else is fine. I for one don’t plan to change my gear set just to catch my dog running at me.We all understand the buffer issues - shorter bursts and better technique solves that one.

Pentax could publish white papers explaining how to use their settings for purpose cases - that would (IMO) render the AF complaints moot.

@normhead has taken the time to figure it out. Most users try a few times, aren’t pleased with the result and blame the gear.

The gear is what it is. If it doesn’t meet a need there is other gear that does. Why do we need another brand of gear with identical characteristics? We need brands of gear with different chanracteristics.

Are w certain the entire internview was reported? Is it possible there were ‘strictly off-the-record’ responses, so as not to reveal 2019 product plans, and Adam respected their wishes?
