The other noteworthy sign is ‘Last Chance Gas’ just after you cross the Wabash River at Evansville into eastern Illinois. There’s nothing between the Wabash River on the east and the Mississippi River on the west at St. Louis.

You haven’t met mrs monochrome.

I collect 1970’s and older Pentax lenses and accessories. My collection fits in one Medium-sized Hitchcock chest of drawers.

I don’t think so. The people who want and will pay for a DFA*35/1.4 probably don’t want or already have a gap-filler 35 - or the FA31 Limited.

Multiply the number of lenses you think they will sell over the next n period (10,000?) x the profit per lens at the factory level you think they will make per lens ($100?). Whatever that number is ($1,000,000?) defines why they did this upgrade.

A reply to that post - IIRC by Digitlais - listed several Quicskhift Pentax lenses that have an aperture ring. I can’t find it though.

I hope your dreams are peasant and in color - so you can see da *’s and gold rings :D

FWIW I hope this lens is a killer - a huge success for Pentax. When the stock of 16-50 and 50-135 run out I hope they re-release them with 11-18 standards so APSc shooters have a Holy Trinity equivalent to match the APSc Professional camera. Imagine Pentax with a complete set of fast zooms, Limiteds and a Flagship camera in both formats!! And APSc will have all * zooms.

It’s quite simple, really. When not shooting I use a neck a strap or carry the camera with neck strap wrapped around my wrist. When not around my neck ready to shoot I use a camera bag.

The grip of the right hand is light, to guide the camera only. On my K-1 my fingers wrap around the grip and my trigger finger naturally falls to where Pentax placed the shutter release and front e-dial.

The KP feels similar to using an LX with Grip A. It certainly isn’t awkward if an LX isn’t awkward. On KP, with the medium or large grip (for my large hands) the fingertips of my right hand lightly grip the camera body just beside the grip, the fleshy part of my palm next to my right thumb rests under the back corner of the body and my trigger finger falls naturally on the release button or front e-dial. Only the Back AF Button is slightly in the wrong place, and I’ve adjusted to that. It’s the left hand that makes everything fit and work well.

Those of us who have both K-1 and KP and use them weekly can speak with some authority and experience. KP isn’t perfect, it is a compromise like all cameras, but it isn’t a mess. Since the intent is to compete in size with a MILC with lenses mounted KP is no more or less awkward than the MILC’s people rave about.

I like the KP and actually use it more frequently than my K-1, but more casually and for a shorter time per use.

I understand exactly what you mean. I was simply saying the large grip is acceptable.

The K-7/K-5/K-3 platform body is ergonomically perfect for smaller-handed people but my pinky finger hangs below the grip - uncomfortably.. I suspect the 'Evolution' APSc Flagship will have a new body design and perhaps a new designation (C* ?), more akin to the K-1. The KP AF button is not perfectly placed. The front e-dial is OK.

The KP isn't perfect, but I'm accustomed to the button positions and grip style now and operate it comfortably with muscle memory. I can switch between cameras without mental adjustment. I consider the KP a compromise camera that I use for travel and grandchildren indoor snapshots. The smaller form and Accelerator Chip overcome any ergonomic negatives for me.

The K-1 body could not be better for my larger hands.

* 'c' format and C=100 years.

The large grip is quite close to the 'traditional' DSLR grip in size and feel. I control my cameras mainly with my left hand anyway, so the grip serves only as leverage for button presses, not as truly camera support.

I will bet the 11-18 was announced now and available for pre-order now due to production scheduling, meaning there is something else to be announced at CP+ that is next in line for pre-production (I'd bet the initial run of 11-18's is complete or nearly complete).

What's the next lens on the roadmap that says SPRING 2019? (Hint: It's an f/4 ZOOM in the 70-200 range, D FA class).

As I recall it, Jun Hirakawa was ‘retired’ by the President of Pentax (son of the Chairman of Hoya - who chose K-7 for the new platform as a nod to the mountain) because Hirakawa refused to design lenses explicitly to score high on the objective tests. He held to the quality of the final image as the design standard.

Ten years ago there were vigorous discussion threads here and Photo.net and other forums on the subject of whether the FA35/2 was a good substitute for the FA31/1.8 Limited for those with tight budgets. In general the FA35/2 was judged an outstanding optic, sharp, colorful and yes, a worthy compromise.

I’m disheartened to read the same lens with better coatings questioned as a valid offering by Pentax. I owned one before I bought my 31 and to my way of thinking Pentax has actually provided a fine FF wide angle for those who don’t have $800 for the best wide in the current catalog. We should be applauding them for not just trashing the machines and moving on.

I sold my 35/2 to buy a 31. I shall not spend $400 to replace the same lens I sold for $275.

My MZ-S is giving me side eye.

IF they update the 31 Limited it won’t happen until the current stock is exhausted. More than likely the stock of FA35/2 ran out - and rather than building some thousands of SMC lenses they tweaked the barrel and maybe hood, added the modern coatings and voila! - a budget 35 in the catalog,

DPR being DPR they headlined the post with the FA35/2 so most of the comments criticize screw drive and ask for modern lenses from Pentax. The 11-18 posts mostly question the apparent price but aren’t negative.

More than likely they have to run a batch of lenses so they changed the coating formula and color of the barrel. No sinister intent here.

FA35/2 was the first AF lens I bought for my K10D, way back in 2006. At the time many called it the poor man’s FA31 because it is small, sharp, fast-focusing, the colors really pop (especially blues) and flare and CA aren’t bad. It really isn’t that noisy. This should be a very nice lens if people give it a chance (my bet is they won’t).

I sold mine a couple years ago when I bought a second-hand FA31. Despite the 31 rendering, I miss the FA35/2.

The 35/2 and 50/1.4 still sell in Japan. They’re probably out of stock on the 35/2 so they need to run a batch. Adding 20 / 28 / 35 / 50 with HD coatings = Proven tech on (some of them) cult lenses and would be an interesting take, though DPR would absolutely FLAME them. Update to this new barrel with HD and where appropriate rounded blades, (FA20/2.8), F28/2.8, F50/1.7. Keep the FA 50/1.4 until out then make it a Limited and update the DA50/1.8 to D FA.
