A few years ago, in a misguided attempt to be ironic, I opened a second PF account with the user name PentaxIsDoomedTM.

The account was closed* . . . . . and Pentax wasn’t

You better hope the USD stays strong relative to JPY. If the USD drops (as I suspect it will) the retail price of K-new will rise after release like the K-1 briefly did. In a currency-neutral market I would expect Ricoh to closely match supply and demand to keep the price constant for much longer than historically. They won’t need to clear stock for the next upgrade body so they needn’t cut the price after six months. Waiting to avoid the “early adopter premium” might not work any more - you might just be waiting.

Well you guessed wrong on that one Ron.

I hadn’t visited this thread since early September. It was amusing reading the posts and speculation about the K-new (which had not been revealed yet) with knowledge of what has come since.

Start about page 85 and read from there to here. It’s a hoot. :D

I assume you are correct, but whatever the new technology is (some of it may be hinted at in the GRlll) it will be shared across all three DSLR platforms. Sometimes Pentax releases cameras out-of-order for reasons that aren’t clear. For instance, K-01 was released in late February. It had a new smaller IBIS system and LiveView that were also used in the K-30, which came later in the spring. Essentially, K-01 was a K-30 without the viewfinder. It would not be unprecedented to release aa 645x shortly before an evolved K-3ll.

I don’t think they have made any promises, whatever we think we heard (or want to have heard).

Correctly read, it says K-3 replacement comes before K-1 replacement, not K-3 replacement comes next. But whatever. An APSc flagship is in development. It is probably near announcement (I hope in late August), but not necessarily near actual release (LX was released after the 60th Anniversary year) and I don’t care if something else comes before, as long as a high-spec near professional APSc body is released.

EDIT: added italicized text.

Read carefully. He made no such assertion. He merely (correctly) stated Ricoh did not expressly declare an APSc camera is next.

My personal guess is the next camera will be a 645 with all the new platform technology, followed by the APSc flagship.

IMO from experience KP is best with DA Limiteds and the small grip, especially the three pancakes (I think it was built expressly for them); then the shorter zooms. I’ve used it with my FA*200 and FA*300 with medium grip and it is OK handheld with proper left hand support. I haven’t tried anything 400mm or longer because I default to K-1 and tripod for those. Using the KP grip and tele lenses is probably doable but is a compromise. Tripod and a gimbal head or heavy ball head would be better, IMO.

IMO KP is Ricoh’s Statement that MILC’s have gotten large enough that a small OVF camera and small lenses is a preferable format. 400mm+ lenses are awkward on an APSc MILC too.

K-1: Just Do It. You will be happy :)

Just hold the camera in your left hand next to your chest and tilt the screen up a bit.

IMO neither is really great. K-3 + grip still cramped my hands and I thought the K-3 button placement was sub-optimal. Don’t let me discourage you - KP is an acquired muscle memory camera, that feels natural now, but it took a while. Even with the largest grip it isn’t as comfortable as a regular full handgrip; my fingertips press against the body rather than wrapping around the grip. OTOH, I’ve used it enough that I’m accustomed to it, and I never ‘got there’ with the K-3. With KP it’s all about left hand support and lightly gripping with right hand, versus supporting K-3 with a firmer right hand grip and balancing with the left hand

I just received a K-5lls with grip this afternoon and it feels more natural with and without the grip than the K-3 did, and I think it is smaller than either K-3 or KP.

And the K-1 is perfect. Perfect.

I looked at who quoted me; still not following the thread. IIRC LX was introduced in 1980 “in honor of” the 60th Anniversary, so there is precedent for a release in 2020 for the 100th Anniversary.

In 2007 I had an inkling houses were overpriced but I didn’t sell mine for two reasons:
  1. It would still provide all the things I bought it for even if the price declined.

  2. If I sold it, what would I buy with the money? They all provide the same shelter at the same price.*

*I actually do know someone who sold his house, rented an apartment for four years and bought a much larger house with the money he had put aside.
**If you sell your gear sell it all, put the money aside and wait for a large maker to go under. Then buy the dip.

I suppose the answer lies in Unit volume and cost amortization across the units. Do the additional units of K-70 help fulfill volume pricing discounts from component suppliers like Sony and (Socionext?) and increase ROIC if P&E investments are required? Does additional cash flow help? How many add-on lens sales does K-70 generate?

I think you nailed it. If everyone internalized this there might be less angst.

K-70 would be logical, but do you think KP is a real long-term body?

If anyone on this Forum has any real input or information they aren’t saying . . . . . and if they are saying, they don’t have any real input or information.

It is highly unlikely Pentax would compete against the D500, which is actually a fairly specialized Action camera and priced accordingly. Such a camera, even priced as a Pentax, would be $1,700 and Pentax doesn’t have and won’t produce lenses to match the capabilities of such a camera, That’s not to say the new camera won’t be faster than the KP, with decent video, much improved AF, a better buffer and more features than KP. (Which is a much better camera than it is credited to be)

The new camera probably won’t be $1,300 - the feature set at that price point would be disappointing.

This designer also designed the K-30. The K-30 had problems mounting several lenses under the protuding nose. The K-50 body design didn't have the schnazz and didn't block lenses.

:D It was intentional hyperbole, but based on my contention that the coming APSc flagship is delayed because it will replace the entire K-7/K-5/K-3 platform; there will be a leap forward in sone kind of technology; and the core technology will matriculate to 645 and FF. I would not be surprised to see 645 drop first, then APSc, then FF, plus a lot of lenses.

Bear in mind, I know nothing and have no internal contacts.

A D500 is $1,500.
An 80D is $1,149.
A K-1ll is $1,797.
Yikes!

It will have a revolutionary Hybrid viewfinder that actually does show WYSIWYG including 23 stops of DR, true DoF preview, no flicker, awesome refresh rate, best tracking AF ever on a camera, eye AF, 50 lens auto AF adjust, broadcast quality video, 20 FPS mechanical shutter, UHS-lll, and an effectively unlimited buffer - and DPR will give it an 88 Silver because “they must be baking the RAW’s”.
